The Cartoons That Made Us Gay: She-Ra

“The Laughing Dragon” (September 19, 1985)

Here we are, at the last installment of Cartoons That Made Us Gay — for this season, anyway. Since the kickoff of this bonus series was about He-Man, it only made sense to bookend it with She-Ra. And although this is a very gay episode of She-Ra, it’s not one that explores the lesbian subtext of the original series, which the Netflix reboot brought to the forefront in a big way. In fact, we’re asking you, our loyal listeners, to tell us which She-Ra episode we should revisit in the future.

Listen to our He-Man episode, with special guest Henry Gilbert.

Hey just wanna reach out and let you know Im going back through pods on here I missed and just really appreciate you guys taking time to do all this. Your voices and chemisty and research and love for this stuff is just a joy and perfect counter balance to my work day. Happy Holidays to you both

This was great. Before I listened to this, I commented on your fb post and mentioned The Reluctant Dragon, which I love. But after hearing this episode, I notice the difference between the two: the Reluctant Dragon isn't put in a situation where he has to fight. But similar to this, I'd also mention Lambert the Sheepish Lion. I'm not sure he'd be read as gay, though. Just cowardly, until someone he loves is in trouble.

Leaving this here: https://youtu.be/XnD01qkQJOk (the exchange with the dragon’s ‘oh you’ limp wrist to Bo’s “I’m a man” is featured, among other things)

I can't tell if you're complaining or not, but I guess? I think it's a legitimate conversation to have, about the value of a creator saying "I'm okay with people reading our character as X" but not actually endorsing the character as actually being X. They're not invalidating the X community, and that's nice, but I think there's a potential for them to get the community support when they didn't actually do the work. Does that make sense?

Drew Mackie

Wow did you guys get down to hair splitting about trans representation. The fact that we can complain about the level of representation to that minute degree should show us how far we've come, no?

Ryan Atkins

Heh. That's the exact fate he deserves.

Thanks so much for this episode. Great listen and discussion. “Be careful what you drop down a hole” is my favorite line of the episode. 😂 Kowl was actually one of my favorite characters on the show and it never occurred to me how gay he was until now. In the reboot he does have a brief appearance as a throw pillow in Glimmer’s room.

Magicats would be a good one too.

or Huntara i cant believe i forgot about that one

Jerry Shreffler

I would suggest the anxious apprentice or any of the sea hawk episodes

Jerry Shreffler

Also loved my Sea Ponies too

Without question, She-Ra made me gay…the fact I was obsessed with the action figures certainly flagged to my parents that I might be.
