GEE Movie Club for August: Summer School!

Hi all. The movie Glen and I picked for this month is 1987's SUMMER SCHOOL! Which stars Kirstie Alley at the height of her powers and before she dedicated herself to sucking and which is directed by none other than Carl Reiner!

It's not super available to stream at the moment, so you can watch a version we posted here. PW: thurman

(Please ignore the alert about remaining disk space that shows up in the corner. It turns out I am not perfect.)

Is this a movie you watched? Is this a movie you perhaps watched during a lazy Comedy Central afternoon?

Hit us up with any comments, questions or criticisms, and we will respond to them in this month's edition of the GEE Movie Club podcast!

GEE Movie Club for August: Summer School!

Seen this movie at least a dozen times (but prob not for over 10 years). Just rewatched it today after listening to your podcast, and I legit cried when Wonder-dog lost his doll-head toy, and then teared up with joy when they were reunited. 🥹 Why is there no Oscar category (or at least a Golden Globe) for Best Animal Performance? In any case, this dog deserves one. But given the taste of most members of the academy, 9/10 times a horse would prob win for some “prestige” picture 🙄.

I know she’s the one in a sitcom, but it’s hilarious that you guys don’t mention Mark Harmon in your descriptions of this movie. He was truly at the height of his popularity and I recalled this movie really being a vehicle for him. When I read your description I thought it might be some different Kirstie Alley movie having never bothering to see either as a hipster teen that this movie was definitely not geared toward.

I was probably 7, maybe 8 when I first caught a few minutes of this on TBS. Specifically, “We’re PSYCHOPATHS!”. And only that scene and the one following it, where Shoop talks to them all while they still have the makeup effects on. I’ve grown up watching horror movies, so I wasn’t bothered. me at all. I was super interested in it quite honestly. For YEARS I thought this was a movie where Mark Harmon taught a special class of deformed teens, a la Garbage Pail Kids. When I finally learned what this movie was (in high school), I was a little let down that they were all normal kids after all.

Wait this movie gets mentioned on Psych a lot?

Oh, damn I must have watched this movie a hundred back in the day. Between this movie and Vanessa Bartholomew on Princes Love Symbol album I thought Kirstie Alley was the coolest. Nowadays not so much. I’m surprised that it’s not so readily available especially since it was often referenced in the show Psych.

$50K > That's $130K in 2022 $$$ So I see how a teacher might ditch summer school (but not be dumb enough to quit). Jerome just went off to the bathroom and never came back? I did like how for the 80s this movie does show that sometimes people learn in different ways. I feel like that was still "new(ly out of college) education" technique at the time. No idea if the writers or directors really meant for that message, but it does come through in 2022, with plenty of other cringe of course.
