Sanford Arms Meets a Gay — And He’s Black!

“Phil’s Assertion School (September 23, 1977)

Sanford Arms was NBC’s attempt to continue the world of Sanford and Son without either Sanford or the Son. It didn’t work, and of the eight episodes produced, only four ever aired. That said, its second ever installment not only introduced a gay character but also it became the first black cast sitcom to ever do a gay episode with a gay character. So while this attempt at a Sanford spinoff didn’t work, it still landed its place in history. We’re joined again by Dr. Alfred L. Martin to discuss.

I'm back after having listened to the rest. All mentions of Mama's Family are such a gift. I remember being a kid and watching the show with my uncle. A Sonya and Buzz episode came into the rotation and my uncle tried to explain who they were. I just found the whole idea so off-putting. Vint having kids? No, give me Naomi, thanks. I'd listen to a podcast about Raytown everyday.

Vanessa has probably been my favorite Huxtable for like over 25 years. When I was little, it was Rudy. Not that I've watched the show in a super long time for a few reasons. I just wanted Vanessa to be okay. And then Tempest had that talk show...

Another one off character they don't bring back in a later episode, I bet.

A rooming house literally just rents out rooms and the residents are on their own for food, cleaning, etc. A boarding house has a live-in manager who serves cooked meals to the residents (and in many cases, cleans for them too). It's from the same etymology as the phrase "room and board." (This might explain why there's a bellhop. Boarding houses need a staff.)
