Troy McClure Isn’t Gay, But…

“A Fish Called Selma” (March 24, 1996)

In this episode, The Simpsons send up the glass closets of Hollywood and what some actors are willing to do to pass for “normal.” Troy McClure explicitly says he’s not gay, but the way the industry treats him for not fitting the leading man mold and what he does to find success anyway parallels what a lot of gay stars have done and what some are still doing.

This was such a great episode. I feel like we have a lot of the same sensibilities regarding 90s TV and pop culture. Thank you for leaving in the whole clip of the Planet of the Apes musical, It's been a ton of episodes, as you well know, so I apologize if you've mentioned this before. Have you ever watched Get a Life? David Mirkin was a creator. It was my favorite show in 5th and 6th grade, and I think it's responsible for forming a big portion of my sense of humor. If you aren't familiar, you should check it out. If you've mentioned it before, then I feel like a creep for asking a question that's already been answered.

Ah there you go

Ian O’Phelan! He does super cool stuff!

Selma's outfits in the episode are based off of clothes Marilyn Monroe wore.

Lobo

So excited to listen to this one!!

Not that I'm mister Muppet expert, but there's a Muppet TV movie from the 70s about Kermit as the frog prince. I only remember it because it's exactly the kind of thing a network would run on a Sunday afternoon in the 90s if a baseball game got rained out.

Great art!

Gelson's sounds so magical.

I’ve always found it at Ralph’s or Gelson’s (I’m not actually rich enough for Gelson’s, but I live right by one). Fresca + Tequila is basically a Paloma.

I’ve never had it. I kinda thought it wasn’t available anymore. Where does one purchase a Fresca?

Drew Mackie

Hot take: Fresca is the most underrated soda. (It's the best mixer! It goes with everything!)
