Girlfriends Hosts a Lesbian Baby Shower

“And Baby Makes Four” (November 3, 2003)

Before she was the literal mom on Blackish, Tracee Ellis Ross was the glue holding the figurative family together for eight seasons on Girlfriends. Drew and Glen are joined by Jennifer Eden to discuss why Ross is maybe one of the better examples of showbiz royalty and why this episode of TV is unique in offering viewers two black queer women in a relationship (guest stars Dawnn Lewis and Samaria Graham). Also: Walter is THE WORST.

When they reunited for Blackish, the Girlfriends cast explained how their show ended the way it did.

BTW: Two more viewing suggestions beyond Girlfriends: the “Feminisn’t” episode of Blackish featuring that reunion and the “There’s Something About Dr. Mary” episode of Frasier.

It looks like Dawnn Lewis is in the Broadway show Tina! Idk what all is happening with Broadway these days, but it doesn't look like she was retired as of last year. Also, I am so damn happy I got my Alf shirt while I could.

Great episode with a great guest! Girlfriends is one of those series that I almost completely missed because I wasn't watching much new TV while I was in college and grad school. I never realized that was Angie Stone was singing the Girlfriends theme song. I never knew about Dawnn Lewis writing the theme song for "A Different World," but she isn't the performer for any of them (at least not the lead). The pre-retool first season singer was Phoebe Snow, followed by Aretha Franklin and then Boyz II Men did the last few.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for my compliment, I burst into hysterical laughter in front of many strangers on the street today. This has genuinely made my week. Plus you will be relieved to know I'll stop stalking you now.
