I Dream of GEE-nnie

“Indispensable Jeannie” (November 25, 1968)

We’re as surprised as anyone that we’ve found an episode of I Dream of Jeannie that we can cover on this podcast. All credit goes to Brett White, who’s not only host of the Must Have Seen TV podcast but also the guy currently writing a book on the life of Hayden Rorke, who played Dr. Bellows on Jeannie but also was openly gay to the show’s cast and crew — and who pulled some important strings in TV history. This episode is even more interesting when considered in the context of Rorke’s life, but it does actually feature a real live gay joke.

This confirmed that this podcast has so conditioned me that I can't hear Drew say "Maude" without having to listen to the Family Guy extended theme.

This episode was so interesting! I can’t wait to buy Brett’s book!

I watched a lot of episodes of Jeannie when UPN was a thing. They aired it along with Bewitched in an hour block called Screengems Network, which rotated Bewitched/Jeannie, The Partridge Family/The Monkees and Charlie's Angels. Jeannie was my favorite, but I also enjoyed TPF/TM. I eventually bought the original DVD releases of Jeannie when Sony released them. Mill Creek reissued the series and recently put out a Blu-ray of Jeannie that basically looks like a upscaled DVD, everyone says.

Me too! This whole episode was great and I learned a ton but that’s the fact that blew my mind the most.

Well, specifically there are djinn but yes. They are sort of neutral things created by Allah and existing alongside us. It’s one of those things that is so starkly different from Judeo-Christian conceptions of the world that I find fascinating.

There are genies in the Koran?!

I so glad this crossover happened! 👍🏾 Re: the logophobia convo at the end, I can't say that any of them truly frightened me, but I can think of a few that I found genuinely off-putting in a way I still can't really articulate. The "spinning baton" Looney Tunes intro from the late 60s did this for me, along with the Carolco logo at the end of Terminator 2. I also recall a manufacturer's logo at the end of the early Simpsons DVD releases that I was eager to skip.
