GEE Movie Club: Dance 'Til Dawn

Hello and welcome to the first edition of GEE Movie Club, wherein we announce a movie on the first of the month and encourage you all to watch and discuss it, book club-style. And our inaugural selection is... Dance 'Til Dawn, a 1988 film that could not be more on-brand for Gayest Episode Ever but which we suspect many of you have not seen.

What the movie lacks in fame it makes up for in 80s sitcom stars, as it features Christina Applegate, Alyssa Milano, Tracey Gold, Tempestt Bledsoe, Matthew Perry, Alan Thicke, Kelsey Grammer and Edie McClurg. Which is a lot. But does it make the movie good? That's up to you to decide.

And what luck! The film is actually posted in high quality on YouTube, for free, meaning you could start watching it THIS VERY MOMENT.

Here's how this will work: Use this post as the message board for any and all thoughts you have of this film. Ask questions — to us, to each other — or just tell us we have terrible taste in movies, and at the end of the month, we will post an episode where we discuss the movie in full as well as addressing/answering any comments you have about it.

Also, this is only for members supporting us at the $5 a month level or higher, and we look forward to involving you more and more in future editions, maybe even having you make wacky neighbor walk-ons.

Also? Suggest what movie we should cover next month!

I found this perfect hangover viewing. I was impressed with Tracey Gold's arc for an eighties teen in movie - I assumed it was going to end with the popular jerk reaalizing she was a catch and changing his ways, which sort of happened, but he still didn't get her and she became a stronger independent person. I do wish Tempestt Bledsoe got more to do than just enable Tracey Gold's story though. There is a better version of this film somewhere where she ends up being a lesbian and going to the prom with a popularl girl who comes out. I wondered if the geeky kid (who was cuter in his glasses imho) was going to be gay, but of course, no.

Where do we think this supposed to be set? Did Tempestt Bledsoe really refer to tape cleaner!? I got a gay vibe from Matthew Perry in the mall scene. I laughed when Alan Thicke tried to get his son to replace a space poster with one of Heather Locklear. I love how in these movies people just know exactly where everyone else lives. These kids’ parents are all disinterested in their kids’ actual dates—except Tracey Gold’s parents, of course. It’s weird that even though all these kids are excited about prom there are a lot of people not going. Who just asks for a banana daiquiri? And then is fine with just bourbon? Of course “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” is “the song” of a couple who just decided to get divorced.
