The Cartoons That Made Us Gay

As you may have heard, our new Patreon-exclusive bonus series we're doing is The Cartoons That Made Us Gay, all about cartoons we watched when we were younger that may not have intentionally skewed queer but nonetheless resonated with us as such. We have a pretty good idea of some of the episodes we'd like to cover, but which ones would you want us to include?

Mummies Alive! It had a female character who had to pretend to be male back in ancient Egyptian times. The other Mummies (except for the leader) didn’t know she was female until they are resurrected.

I think SWAT Kats is worth examining. It’s not only kind of ahead of its time regarding animation and storytelling, but also sticks out to me for being kind of queer. It has a lot of the same vibes as Top Gun. Other shows that come to mind: YuGiOh (primarily for character design), X-Men Evolution (the high school angle i think opens the door for queer interpretation vs the 90s show), Gargoyles (obviously), and Batman:TAS (the first Clayface storyline is Rock Hudson meets Tennessee Williams)

Whoa! I remember this from kindergarten and recall being very enthralled by Sinbad. Thanks for reminding me of the title! 🙌🏾

Philip Rivera

as a youngster I always liked seeing Marine Boy! I think I was 7 at the time. Battle of the Planets when I was late-teens.

David Paul Morgan

The Mr T cartoon where he’s a bus driver for a gymnastics team is sooooo gay. I had the jigsaw puzzle and the cereal and everything. There was a lady on that show who was like the chaperone or something and she was so camp.

Tom Boyer

I have nothing to add, other than I want to hear episodes about all of this.

Kat Heagberg

Surely mention “Scooby Doo.” Daphne!

Joseph Barcia

Sailor Moon, ReBoot,

Stephen

Captain Planet

Phil Crehan

Definitely She-Ra and He-Man! Also, Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite shows and there’s a lot of queerness there. Ed (the computer expert) is either trans or non-binary.

Garfield always seemed to give me that “bitter queen” vibe, and I always thought there was something gay about a bunch of dude turtles hanging out together, ie TMNT (though I think they are brothers, so maybe that’s weird). The disney afternoon gave us Baloo (Talespin) who surely had us young bears swooning, and something about Count Duckula and Inspector Gadget seems kinda gay. Of course, Animaniacs and Ren & Stimpy gave us some good drag, Doug had at least one formative moment or two, The Powerpuff Girls (HIM!), and Aah Real Monsters & Rocko’s modern life gave us lots of camp. Wish there was some way to include The Wuzzles because there’s just something lgbtq+ about a bunch of animals being combined to make new creatures that makes me feel like they promote acceptance of different kinds of people. Finally, Arthur sealed the deal recently by making Ratburn actually gay, confirming something we always knew was true. The Simpsons definitely made me gay, but most of those big moments have been covered on the main series. Perhaps a Simpsons episode where you just hit all the smaller gay references (Homer in Marge’s wig, Bart marching in the Gay Pride Parade, Comic Book Guy etc.?)

"Sinbad Jr. and his Magic Belt" where a comely young adventurer and his parrot Salty travel the world righting wrongs. A quick cinch of his magic belt turns him into a muscular do-gooder dynamo. My adult self smiles a bit at some of the possibly-queer-coded characters and situations like in Ronstermon where the evil doctor tugs frantically at the belt of the shackled Sinbad. "That's it, Doc, just pull!" But in my earliest memories my four-year-old self wanted very much to always be with Sinbad and to have him with me on my pillow as I tried to fall asleep.
