Bonus video! What happens to you after you're in a bank heist

Hello there!

So, you've just been through a bank heist. Robbers have held you at gunpoint for hours, the FBI rescued you, and ... what happens next? Do you have to go in to work the next day, do you get overtime, and how does anyone know that YOU weren't one of the bank robbers? In this week's bonus video, we're diving into the day-after details of the bank heist that inspired Dog Day Afternoon. Plus a fun glimpse at Patty Hearst's cute t-shirt.

Now here’s a thing: there is a Doctor Who fan theory (pre-existing! I’m not the one who came up with it this time!) that a) the second Doctor and his male companion, Jamie, are boyfriends, and b) the actors, Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines, are deliberately portraying them as such. YouTube is stuffed with fan-edit videos of them getting touchy-feely with each other, often set to music, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAB2WDaJacI and this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrXaYjeWkZE (by the way, in this second one, look out for the clip where the Doctor reaches OVER Victoria to try to wake Jamie first). So the interesting thing about that, for me, is that Troughton was one of Sidney Cole and Hannah Weinstein’s regular actors: he was in several episodes of Adventures of Robin Hood, and also some episodes of Sword of Freedom, including this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkUhiurdEo8 And okay, this is one of my theories with no direct evidence whatsoever; but it does feel at least a bit possible that Troughton noticed what C&W were doing in their shows, thought it would be interesting to do something similar with the Doctor, and convinced Frazer Hines that this was a good idea. Which would mean that C&W were responsible for one of the most successful British tv shows ever having queerness baked into it. Actually, maybe you can scratch the words “one of”; in terms of number of series (okay, “seasons” if you prefer) combined with level of cultural influence, I certainly can’t think of any show that matches Doctor Who on both of those metrics. And because I can’t resist, here’s another Second Doctor and Jamie fan edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNxv7RAI5cg And another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTAXptCP0oo Okay, just one more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZrosYCKsP8 Just kidding, here’s another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI1UAFbfiHU This one isn’t even set to music but I’m putting it in for the “remarkably handsome” line; maybe some of the scriptwriters were in on it too? Or it could have been an ad lib. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHSe55C0CGk This is the very last one, I swear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEHAAJUmZyw Just kidding, here’s another: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmkhaKhZQb4 (in my defence, I’m pretty sure most or all of these do have at least one or two clips that weren’t in the others I linked) Oh, and there was this three-episode documentary series on 20th century queer history in the UK that I watched ages ago, I checked and it’s on YouTube in its entirety, here are the links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9NQbZlKfY4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnzggJuwwwI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZKtd3_NjGY Very last thing: here’s a clip from a 60s documentary about gay people that seems to have been at least a bit sympathetic? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PBZQJb_7QI (I’m not sure where the announcer is getting his info on the number of countries, given that there are dozens left even today, but maybe he was only counting Western European countries, even though he says “in the world”? That would make some kind of sense, given how insular things were back then.)

I had forgotten he played Cohn! He's so greasy and awful, so totally on point. This has to be some kind of record for a straight guy playing gay men. I'm pretty sure you touched on that in one of these videos, but I don't know if the stigma of that can be understood by a younger generation. Tom Hanks in Philadelphia was major news! People talked about it potentially ruining his career. If I remember correctly, that was before it came out because they just couldn't say that anymore because it was literally what the movie was (in part) about. Great work as always, looking forward to the next one.

Zardogs! Zardogs!
