Bonus Video! The time Johnny Carson's gay jokes went a little too far

Hello there!

Did you hear the one about the time Wayne Newton threatened to beat up Johnny Carson over some gay jokes? Or the one about Rodney Dangerfield's gay brother? Or how about the comic who got cut from the show for being too gay?

Johnny had an often-contentious relationship with queer viewers in the early 1970s, and although video footage of it it hard to find, there are little hints here and there of the backstage drama and on-camera yuks. I'm taking a closer look at what little evidence we've been able to find in this week's bonus video.

Here's the full version of Wayne Newton telling his Johnny Carson story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=323NWOIQmlc

If you want to check out my video about the Ellen DeGeneres/Johnny Carson debut, check out this bonus video around the 3:40 mark: https://www.patreon.com/posts/bonus-video-lost-82663337

Adding my two cents to the Cabaret prep, be sure to track down this if you have never seen it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_and_His_Kind_(film)

Christine Cameron

Vague memories of Carson sketches, in which he uses Wayne Newton as a punchline and a catch phrase. A made-up example: "Blah blah blah with Liberace, Tiny Tim -- and Wayne Newton." I was a child staying up past my bedtime to watch a show I wasn't supposed to, so can't be sure.
