Sewers of Paris: Sissy Diva Worship (Ep 444 - Lucas/Cyndi Lauper)
Added 2023-11-30 21:16:54 +0000 UTCMy guest on this week's Sewers of Paris podcast is Lucas Hilderbrand, author of the new book The Bars Are Ours, which provides a deep look at the history of gay bars. Before he launched into this intriguing field of study, Lucas bounced around queer culture for several years, looking for the place where he fit in — a journey that included a particularly traumatic experience in musical theater. And it’s probably not a surprise that his attention focused on the ways that queer people connect with each other, and the things that we lose when we lose institutions like gay bars.

Very true -- whatever the issue is, it always seems to come down to housing! If people could live closer to where they wanted to be, everything would work so much better.

Nobody wants to be a DD, so when you're tipsy how do you get home. American cities are so sprawling and unwalkable that you most often will not have a bar in walking distance. I think if we make are cities more walkable and embrace public transportation then maybe bars can make a comeback.
