Bonus Video! The wig reveal that nearly got Harvey Fierstein arrested

Hello there! In this week's Bonus Video, we're taking a look at a trapeze that Broadway legend Jerry Herman had installed in his home, and how Harvey Fierstein paid tribute to this bizarre decorating choice in La Cage Aux Folles. And speaking of Harvey, I've got a goofy story to share about how a wig reveal (well, technically, a failed wig reveal) went so wrong he nearly went to jail. Plus: I've tracked down some hard-to-find footage that Alfred Hitchcock cut from the US release of Strangers on a Train (but left in for the British version), Jim Bailey doing a Judy Garland impression in a weird tuxedo, and an unlikely connection between The Addams Family and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

I worked at LaCage on LaCieniga in Las Angeles, it was amazing. Matt is brilliant and loving his research

Maybe that scene was removed because it isn't clear why the guy is telling the waiter what his compartment number is. It could be interpreted as ordering a meal for two in his bedroom, which americans would find weird.

Saltywench

Great! Thanks.

Thanks for joining up! And yes I covered The Ritz a bit in my video about Rita: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fRZOUk2HDc

Matt Baume

Oh no. Could you let me know if you're watching it through a browser, on your phone, or in the Patreon app?

Matt Baume

I am having the same issue, and sadly it’s most videos, even the most recent

FINALLY got verified. Patreon is on a serious time-delay this morning. So happy to be here! I have loved your vids since you started. So, here is a request: The Ritz, 1976. In my opinion, easily as funny as Some Like It Hot, but based in a gay bathhouse. America simply wasn't ready for it, but newer generations deserve to know about it! {edit} I see that you are aware of it already! It's SUCH a great back-story, too... Rita Moreno did her "Googie Gomez" schtick at a party, was seen by the guy who then wrote the play.

Tony Lindsey

Yes! Working on it right now, will have it up for Patrons this weekend.

Matt Baume

I loved the La Cage episode! I wanted to ask, is the Alan Car Oscar opening video coming soon? :)

Dalin Rowell

That's what I was thinking. At that time period it may ave been a trigger for a censor. Or it could have also been deemed unnecessary.

Thomas Pileggi

They definitely should not be saying that! I'm looking for any that are causing errors but not finding anything, so if you have a chance please let me know which ones aren't working for you!

Matt Baume

That's an interesting theory! I imagine men MUST have occasionally dined behind closed doors ... and we see them do just that in the next scene, so it's not like Hitch's US cut was trying to spare us the SCANDALIZING thought that they did so. But maybe there's some subtext to how Bruno is clearly unabashed about his rather indulgent tastes, and tries to provoke Guy to do the same, and the fact that they're preparing to do so in private miiiiiiight prompt some sort of queer insinuation???

Matt Baume

That’s the first thing that came to my mind, but would most people necessarily think of it? They could be conducting confidential business of a non-personal nature. ;-)

QueBijoux

Harvey Fierstien deserves his own episode

Nicholas Johnson

lots of your older videos say sorry no longer available is there away to see them?

I think what you may have missed in the Strangers On A Train scene was that the talkative man was having the food sent to his compartment, the implication being the two men would be dining together alone behind closed doors. And that implies lots of other possibilities.
