Bonus Video! Debbie Reynolds' Very Naughty Joke

Hello there! For this week's bonus video I'm visiting a place I've long heard of, The Outside, with my friend Ollie (a dog). I've got stories for you about a ~forbidden~ commercial that the cast of Will & Grace recorded; an interview with the guy who cancelled Ellen (the first time); and an incredibly dirty joke that Debby Reynolds told when the producers of Will & Grace asked her if she'd be willing to dye her hair red. Let me know what you think of this outdoorsy format or if you prefer the library! I promise if I do this again it'll be on a less windy day. (And that I'll fix my collar.)

I love the library. The Outside is nice too. But Olie needs more screen time for sure!

Love the outdoor walk-n-talk. Seattle's so pretty

I'm a little late to the party but I love the outdoor format! The wind was only a problem towards the end, surely there's something for your mike that can help with that. Also, Seattle is one of my favorite cities, so pretty and so wild. And more bonus Ollie! He's just adorable!

Fun video Matt. The video worked fine for me and I figure you do what you need to do! It was a nice day clearly and so doing it during a walk seemed a nice change of pace. And bonus with Ollie. More Ollie. Also, my memory of Ellen mirrors the previous commenters. The show just lost it's funniness after the coming out. I think the Coming Out was kind of a hail mary for a show that already had run it's course. It seems unfair that people chalked up her coming out as it as a death knell for a show that had already been on for a few years.

Outdoors is a nice change. Maybe static outdoors is the way to go. :)

My dog is also Ollie so love that :,)

I love the outdoor format! :-)

Enjoyed the change of scenery, and the occasional shots of Ollie! I’d encourage you to seek out different places for some bonus videos, as it is a nice change of pace, fun, and somehow more personal (did someone mention parasocial relationships?!). Keeping things fresh and trying things out makes it more interesting! The main videos should continue in the library for a bit more control and “formality.”

After the character of Ellen came out, the show quickly turned into a controversy-of-the-week format that was completely contrary to the prior format of goofy, light-hearted fare that made it easy to forgot one's troubles. I still think that's the reason it failed, rather than the fact that she came out.

Hey Matt! So I'd watch and enjoy these videos even if you filmed while running to catch a bus or if you were at the DMV and the line didn't move once for the entire duration. But personally I prefer the library -- the outdoor setting was a little distracting to me and it lacked the aura of your indoor space. One of the true joys of your videos beyond mere content is seeing your eyes and face light up as you're geeking out about some discovery, forgotten tidbit or newly-acquired artifact. In this video you were every bit the (parasocial!) friend excited to share what you'd pulled together for us as you always are. But there's a whole 'nuther level of "wow, I totally get it" when you're in your physical element. It's like the difference between seeing ancient artifacts at the archeological discovery site versus seeing them in a museum.

Thanks for the video, Matt. Other than the wind at the end, I like the outdoor format. If you don't have one, maybe get a dead cat for your mic? The ratings for Ellen peaked in season two (13th out of 104 shows), dropped in year three, saw a bump in season four when she came out (30th of 162), and then dropped again in season five (#42 out of 156). It may have been cancelled for homophobic reasons but it seems like more of a business decision. They had more than 100 episodes by that point (enough for syndication) and the ratings weren't likely to get better in a sixth season. The writers weren't going to be able to go any further with her relationships, especially given the network restrictions of the day. My memory of the show is that it was most interesting leading up to her coming out and then the show kinda lost its way. It reminds me of after "will they/won't they" couples get together. I've been rewatching W&G episodes and the I Am What I Am line reminded me of Popeye and Bluto's special friendship in the Minute Maid commercial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-OLY2r_kQ4 How that got on the air is beyond me but I love it.
