Bonus video! Dynasty's great caviar fight, the UFO, and a sneak peek at Will & Grace

Dynasty's known for cliffhangers, and the bizarre UFO scene in the finale of the Colbys spinoff is -- I think -- their greatest work. Alas, America didn't quite see it that way, because the show was cancelled before it had a chance to explain itself. But we can still speculate about what the hell they were thinking! Also in this week's bonus video: Some of my favorite nasty fights from the show, from the "champagne is burned" scene to random slapping to the "lost" Saturday Night Live parody with RuPaul. Also, a little sneak peek at some stuff I've dug up on Will & Grace!

GOD! I loved Sable Colby! Stephanie Beacham was the perfect foil fo Alexis and a great villain in her own right

Scott Nesmith

I always knew the actress of Sable as the romance novel writing mother on Troop Beverly Hills lol

I have that exact Gonzo plush in my office <3

Mary McDowell

Another of the cliffhanger endings was the question of who shot JR, which inspired the classic Simpsons episode "Who Shot Mr Burns?" And Will and Grace hinted that Will might be straight but never delivered on it? So is this straight-baiting?

Allan McPherson

Aw I'm so glad you liked them! And yes I have "Lesbianca" on my list to talk about at some point.

"I don't know if you're old enough to remember.." Oh you sweet thing!

Kris Olsen

Absolutely. :)

Surprisingly, I think that Dynasty behind-the-scenes movie came out in 2005. Which is still 15 years ago but seems much older. Also, I love how Fallon not only got a new face but became British after her car accident (and Amanda lost hers when she fell in that pool with Sammy Jo).

Hi Matt! Love your videos! You did an excellent job on Soap and Dynasty! As a soap opera fan, I appreciate the care you took on both the spoof soap and the primetime soap. I would love for you to tackle a storyline on a daytime soap opera. Erica Kaneโ€™s daughter, Bianca, coming out on All My Children in 2000 is a perfect entry point! I can help you out if you decide to do that! Again, excellent job on your videos! Those videos after casually watching you for a few years finally pushed me over the edge to become a patron.

I agree! I loved Jack and Karen a lot more!

My only thing about Will & Grace (having started with the pilot) is that it should have been Jack & Karen. I can't be the only one. I flat out did not care for Will or Grace and stopped watching because they just annoyed me.

Zardogs! Zardogs!

I agree that Season 9 of Dynasty was quite good. But I think they couldn't recover from the mess that was Season 8. The whole Sean Rowan story was stinky.

Garrett S.

Absolutely!

Marsia Powers

Oh my LORD that's a fascinating twist. What a different show it would have been!

Matt Baume

Whaaaaat OMG I did not realize he was in The Frog Prince that's amazing!!!

Regarding Wiil & Grace, John Barrowman has said he read for Will. He was told the reason he was turned down because he wasn't gay enough, yet they hired a straight guy to play the part.

I attended the Cocktails with the Carringtons show last night and had a great time. A lot of great laughs and stories. Gordon Thomson talked about how awful he thought the UFO storyline was and felt it was the show's jump the shark moment. Jack Coleman mentioned that Billy Campbell thought he had been hired to play Sammy Jo's boyfriend, not Steven's. They talked about Diahann Carroll joining the show and how important it was. Gordon said that she and Joan were close friends and he contends that Joan pulled her performances back a bit when they had scenes together in the beginning, to ensure that her friend's character looked really strong. I asked Gordon about his time working with Jim Henson and his face lit up and said he could tell that he was a genius, even in the early days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ByI-QvrtxU

Thanks for another great deep dive! An incredible amount of research. (love the t-shirt in the video, I used your link to order one) I had forgotten that Steven Carrington's boyfriend Luke was played by Billy Campbell. Billy would go on to play the hot gay gynecologist boyfriend of the main character 'Mouse' in Armisted Maupin's 'Tales of The City'. Have you thought about covering that? It was revolutionary for the time and I remember a severe congressional backlash against PBS funding because of it.

Steve McLean

Haha once you start thinking of those shows as fan-recreations of golden age movies you canโ€™t unsee it. Itโ€™s so What About Eve.

Matt Baume

What you said about the 40's-ish melodrama of Dynasty (and it's off-brand Cola, Dallas) explains why my Grandma loved these shows so much in the 80's. It was a throw-back to the entertainment of her younger years! That's a neat connection I hadn't made... (I thought she just had poor taste. lol)
