Bonus Video! The joke ABC wouldn't let Soap make
Added 2022-02-13 18:01:01 +0000 UTC
Well hello there!
Time for another bonus video, and this week I've got the hot gossip about the joke that ABC made the show Soap cut from its pilot episode. Also! Confirmation of the story about Susan Harris cursing out a bunch of NBC executives, and details about a couple of gay guys who (kind of) pulled off an elaborate hoax at ABC. And I hope you'll join us next Sunday (Feb 20) for the premiere of my new Soap video!

Not entirely relevant to Power Rangers, but some facts of the original Sentai and its sister series, Kamen Rider. In 1971, the original series of Kamen Rider aired, and very early in the series the actor for Hongo Takeshi (Hiroshi Fujioka, also played Segata Sanshiro) was injured. They had to quickly make a replacement character and introduced Ichimonji Hayato, who enters the show with "I don't do women" and an Immediate cut to the commercial break (the episode is number 14 and is available on Shout Factory). Not that relevant but an incredibly funny choice. The most recent season of Sentai had its first (?) canonically lesbian character, and Kamen Rider has also had a lot more queer characters recently, though also still has a lot of stereotyped characters. But they recently had their first non-binary actor who was out at the time of filming (had been a previous but they weren't out at the time) which led to one of the characters being non-binary as well.

Omg that's amazing. Do you know where that story's from? I'm on the hunt for Dynasty making-of stuff!

Diahann Carroll has been quoted as saying that she wanted to be on Dynasty to be 'television's first black bitch'. She tells the story of literally crashing a party at Aaron Spelling's house to lobby for the role and it worked. Dominique Deveraux was yet another way she broke new ground

Gosh, the rabbit hole of trivia that movie has (Bert Convy and Regis Philbin in guest roles, Peter Graves in a disaster movie a year before Airplane!, Burgess Meredith sneaking in the F word near the end of the film, and arguably its greatest acclaim to fame, one of the first movies riffed on by MST3K before the show's proper first season on Comedy Central.)

Speaking of Anthony Perkins, I’d love a video about him!

Why did Billy have so many gay and gayish roles in the 70s???

Matthew, what was the nature of the additional reporting that supported the Susan Harris expletive-laden executive visit after the cancellation of Fay?

I'm acquaintances with Marsha Posner-Williams who transcribed Susan's scripts in the very early days and worked her way up to be an associate producer on Soap and Golden Girls. She was working late before the show had debuted and a guy called the office, outraged that the series was going to be on. She listened and then asked if he had seen it (he hadn't) and then asked him if he was the kind of person who took other people's word for things or if he thought for himself. They talked for a while and, at the end, he said that he was going to watch the show and make up his own mind. Looking forward to next week's video!

Love Billy Crystal, and while “Rabbit Test” may be his first theatrical film, he was in “SST Death Flight” aka “SST Disaster In the Sky,” a TV movie that aired on ABC on February 25, 1977, before “Soap” and over a year before “Rabbit Test” opened. I definitely consider TV movies as films especially from the 70s and 80s, but i recognize the debate there. Billy shows up at 00:35 then several times throughout including at a scene 42:55 where he gets called a “pansy” by John De Lancie. https://youtu.be/qcRP50iVznE
