Bonus Video! Remembering Betty White, Looking Ahead to 2022

Welcome to a shiny new year! Let's make this a 2022 that Betty would have wanted. For this week's bonus video, I've rounded up some fun bits from Betty White's career, including a few times she's stood up for queer people. (And also the surprising inspiration for her Mary Tyler  Moore Show character -- Anita Bryant, really?!?!?) Also! A little peek at some topics I'm exploring for videos in 2022!

Oh this is a great suggestion -- thank you!!!

Poppy Z Brite is also a fascinating person just to talk about cause he's got lots of stories about being gay trans and disabled and kept a blog (don't know if it still gets updated) where he talked about some of his experiences. Believe was also a friend of Neil Gaiman but I'd have to check sources on those stories cause its been a while

So, you asked about queer vampire content, regarding Anne Rice and Buffy, and I am moved to mention a formative book by a trans author who wrote a few horror novels back in the 90s while he still presented as female. I believe he still writes under the same name: Poppy Z. Brite. The specific book about vampires would be Lost Souls, while I count the haunted house book that followed it among my favorites, that being Drawing Blood. I know he gave up horror about 20 years ago, but continued to write queer fiction. Not sure if he’s mainstream enough to mention, but his work is amazing.

Alan Freeman

Oof I forgot about that one

Maybe Bea didn't want to do another hotel sitcom after "Amanda's by the Sea" was such a... success?

FYI: The DFW Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will canonize Betty White as a Gay Saint on the eve of what would have been her 100th birthday, Sunday Jan 15 at 7pm, at the gayborhood Legacy of Love monument. Details: https://dallasvoice.com/dfw-sisters-to-saint-betty-white-on-sunday/

Ten Thousand Worlds

For gay vampires, you gotta talk about The Lair!

Michael

Yup, that's on my list -- very hard to find instances of Polari breaking through to mainstream culture though.

Matt Baume

Fascinating. Now we just need to track down whoever Fleckman is!

Matt Baume

Oh that's awesome thank you so much!!!

Matt Baume

Third Rock is on my list too! I'm looking for Behind-the-Scenes info and interviews to tell the full story of how those episodes happened.

Loving the cameo from Wendie Malick in the Spirit Week video- viewers may know her as Eda Clawthorne in The Owl House, or as Chicha in The Emperor's New Groove, though she's been involved in all kinds of tv and voice work (and film too)

Magistrissa

Also, have you ever looked into doing something on the famous British comedian Kenneth Williams? An interesting character on his own but is connected to Polari through a show called "Julian and Sandy' (which, I believe, is generally considered to be the first exposure of Polari to a mainstream audience).

The character of Bobbi Fleckman was based on the legendary record promotion person Bobbi Silver. You can read her answer to a question about it at the end of this article... https://www.allaccess.com/top40-mainstream/10-questions/archive/3755/10-questions-with-bobbi-silver

There's a short film done entirely in Polari on YT that I ran across a few years ago. I also just found this video on Polari https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7ZEs2UbUPs by one of my favorite LGBTQ+ creators which has a lot of good info and resources. On another topic, I would love to see you do a video on Dirk Bogarde, who I think of as the British Rock Hudson.

Happy New Year! I love the show Soap and found it really helpful to me growing up. I have done a few interviews about it and have collected many original scripts and background material. When you’re ready to tackle that show, let me know the kind of information you’re looking for and I’ll be glad to help. 😊

I love your videos, and I am so glad I joined your Patreon. So here are two random things: 1) The character of Bobbi Fleckman played by Fran Drescher guest starred on an episode of The Nanny, playing opposite Fran Drescher in a cute rivalry over Mr. Sheffield plot. Just wanted to make sure you knew that. And 2): Third Rock From the Sun not only has two specifically gay themed episodes that carry the theme right through to the ends, but they were so relaxed they dropped gay moments very casually and positively throughout the whole series. I'd love you to explore that. Thanks for all of your research.

Thomas Pileggi

I don’t have a better link at the moment as I’m on my phone, but if you haven’t already do check out the BBC radio show “Round the Horne” for an example of polari in the UK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_the_Horne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_and_Sandy If you would like an episode or two as an example I can send something over to you.

Sarah Parker-Shemilt

I am very here for the universe in which Rita Moreno plays a character in Dirty Dancing.

Jill V Friedman

As a matter of fact I also have MTV Undressed on my list of stuff to research! It's basically turn-of-the-millennium soft pr0n, down to the music, acting, and plot -- but it always cuts away right when things are about to get good. Such a tease!

Matt Baume

Haha I was later assured by someone who worked on the show that they were actually mashed potatoes!

Matt Baume

How about something on queer teen love stories on TV shows

Leotha Boyd

Thank you so much, you were one of the first people I thought about when I heard the news that morning. I'll have to make some ice cream clowns for my lesbian friends 🖤
