Bonus video! Beverly LaSalle, A Weird Space Saloon, and a 40-Year-Old Murder Mystery Clue

UPDATE: I've changed some settings on the video so hopefully it'll work better now. If not, try clicking this link: https://youtu.be/cd61Jstb8-c

Oh hello! Here's some fun stories I dug up while researching my new video about Barney Miller: We'll start with some fun tidbits about the first recurring gay characters on television, including the lovely Beverly LaSalle on All in the Family. Beverly, it turns out, has a very unexpected connection to a clue on the show Murder She Wrote that seems to have gone unnoticed for forty years! I also talk about how half of a pioneering gay couple on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman went on to star in a deeply bizarre sci-fi flop that I just discovered and am now completely obsessed with. Also! here's the full story on Zatelli, the gay cop whose full multi-episode arc I didn't quite have time to unravel in my main video.

Thanks as always for making these bonus videos possible! And stay tune for next week's bonus, which is all about how ABC used a Mr. Magoo cartoon to conduct a decades-long science experiment.

Some more info to help them troubleshoot. If I open the Patreon app on my iPhone right now, I can see the video at the top but when I tap on it it opens up Vimeo and tells me the video doesn’t exist. This morning, when I put my other comment up there, I couldn’t even see the video in the app. It had some text about Vimeo in that space but no video to tap on. But if iview Patreon through the chrome browser on my iPhone, I can see the video at the top and when I tap on it it works just fine. So, it really seems to just be all over the place. Because this morning, it also showed me just text at the top if I used the chrome browser on my iPhone just like it did in the Patreon app.

Thanks, Matt. The new link works great. I'm sorry you're having such a hard time.

Irisarc

The embed method that I was using at first didn't generate a link, but I've switched settings back to the previous method so now you should be able to watch if you go here: https://vimeo.com/mattbaume/barneybonus1 Sorry this has been such a headache!

Matt Baume

Ah geez this is so frustrating. Thank you for letting me know, this is definitely helping to elevate the issue with Patreon support so we can get this taken care of.

Matt Baume

It seems very hit and miss on my iPhone. It didn’t work at first. Then that evening it did. But I didn’t watch it so I came back to it the next day and it didn’t work. Again, it came back that evening but I didn’t watch it. The next day, it didn’t work again and hasn’t since. 🙁

Tony Law

Hey, Matt! Did you put up another link for us poor android phone patrons on this month's bonus video yet? I don't see it but I'm a bit ditzy and I could have missed it 😁

Irisarc

Speaking as someone who watched Barney Miller live back when it aired - it was the one show I got to stay up past bedtime for (lol @ my hippie mom) - that bit with the handkerchief was definitely keyed to Dietrich talking about "effeminate behavior". My grandmothers both used to tuck their handkerchiefs into their sleeves like that. I think it was a fairly widespread custom that was dying out right around that time - my mother never did it. So the joke is he's acting "effeminate" with that gesture.

Can’t play the video on iOS 14whatever. The shortlinks always worked fine for me!

Lara Long

“Sorry the video does not exist” per Vimeo. Can you please post a link like usual?

ScoobySnacks

My squirrel brain initially made me hesitant to click on the recent half-hour long video, but I wasn't bored or distractible for even a minute!

Total HOME RUN with the Barney Miller episode, Matt! Just when I think I can't be any more impressed with your work you manage to dig up even more backstory and dirt. As for the handkerchief, at the time it was very common for women to have one in the sleeve of their dress, blouse or sweater. Men had pockets, women largely did not. And a lady needed to be prepared for tears, sniffle or sneeze without her purse handy. Audiences would have broadly known that in the era from their mothers and grandmothers having the strategic hanky always handy.

A real life case of public TV outing occurred a few years ago on one of the British talent shows. A British Tabloid had implied or stated that one very charismatic singer, a schoolteacher, was gay and one of the judges assuming it was 1) true and 2) the man was out said in commenting on a performance with lyrics that spoke of loving a woman, could have had the pronouns changed in his case. I remember seeing it on Youtube and feeling very shocked. I believe the judge got a LOT of criticism.

Ditto on the missing video thing. I know you're working on it but I wanted to put my two cents in.😉 Fyi, I'm trying to watch on my android phone. I also think the regular inclusion of a backup link is a good idea.

Irisarc

Also unable to view the message I get from Vimeo is: OOPS! The embed code for this video is not valid.

Steven Valerio

In the other posts, the back up video links work for me, is there a back up link for this one? (Watching on an iPhone) Love your videos Matt!

David Hudson

I had no problem getting the video (on a Macbook air). It did seem to buffer a few times but not sure if that's an isolated issue.. Thanks for all the great stuff

Steve McLean

I assumed that the handkerchief up the sleeve was just meant to be a "fancy" thing that would indicate that someone might be gay? (I.e., not something a "straight guy" would do.) But it could also very well have been some reference that audiences of the time would immediately get but I do not.

Thomas Baer

Ah geez. I'm sorry this is still so difficult. Are you getting an error message, and what kind of device are you using to view it?

Matt Baume

Ok, that makes sense ... he's doing sort of a fancy-man move.

Matt Baume

URGH, sorry it's still being a pain. Are you on Android or iPhone or a desktop machine? Thanks for helping to figure this issue out.

Matt Baume

I am also unable to play the video. :(

RJ

Thank you for your efforts to get that Vimeo video embed feature to behave. ❤️ Technical troubleshooting can be a pain. Alas, as you suspected, this latest experiment did not work. The link leads to a screen displaying a message along the lines of “Sorry. This video does not exist.” I don’t know how much trouble it would be to do so, but perhaps a partial solution could be to always include redundant direct links to any Vimeo videos at the end of each post —just in case they act up for whatever reason.

When I saw the yellow handkerchief go up the man's sleeve, I thought of the word fop (not fraternal order of police) . It was used to describe a dandy, a man whoisi too concerned with appearances. .

Michael Sanders

"Hey, this is me you're talking to. Not Zetelli (sp)" My heart instantly dropped. He, flat out, outed him without even thinking. And that audience reaction...you can sense how conflicted they were. Sadly stuff like this still happens in this day and age. A cis/straight outing someone else to defend themselves from being accused/thought of as anything but straight.

Nini L

Matt's next door neighbors reported the sound of someone screaming in his home. 😉

Bryan Cybershaman(X) Logie

Oh geez. Are you on Andoid or iPhone or on a desktop machine?

Matt Baume

Still telling me the video doesn’t exist. :(
