A Sneak Peek for Star Trek Day!

Hi folks!

Today's Star Trek Day, and to mark this festive occasion, my friend Samantha and I wanted to share with you a work in progress that we've been working on.

She's an expert on clothing, hair, makeup, and cosplay; I'm a lifelong Star Trek fan; and together we thought it would be fun to do a podcast where we talk about the many wild weird fascinating fashions that appear on episodes of Star Trek.

What you'll hear is a rough cut of our first test episode. It's a work in progress that may not become a full series. But since it's Star Trek Day, we wanted to share this little experiment with you. And we'd love to hear what you think of it.

Live long and prosper... in sensible shoes.

Matt

That's high praise!!! Thank you.

I feel this is a podcast Garak would approve of.

Rian Smoak

I really liked this! Fashion isn't my forte, but you both were fun to listen to. Looking forward to more. 😄

Ah that's great to hear, so glad it made you laugh. Thank you for listening & for the suggestions!

Y'all's rapport is great and so much fun. The energy and zip in your interaction really gives a lot of life to something that could get a bit stodgy. And I say that as someone who loves fashion and has a history with Star Trek. Also, I haven't laughed this hard at a podcast in a good while, which is a testament to y'all's wit plus the rapport I mentioned above. Though given that the episodes of the original star trek are rather distant in the mind of most people except hard core trekkies, maybe if you do the podcast have a gallery or links to screenshots or something would allow listeners with less or no visual memory of the episode connect a bit more especially for the fashion-focused portion as opposed to the more narrative-focused ones. And perhaps if it is a going concern maybe doing some greatest hits or grouping some episodes together since the crew's fashion doesn't change that often (and there a lot of crew-focused episodes with few new costumes) but there are maybe enough new aliens across a collection of several episodes to have enough outfits to talk about. But then again, this was a unsolicited advice, so treat it is is deserves. But seriously, this was the most enjoyable hour I've had in a good while. I'd certainly enjoy more!

OUTSTANDING

Fun fact: Pike in his Party City Lame Wizard look is my Twitch user icon.

Awesome! Glad to hear it. Yes, talking about the fashion is definitely new to me and really changes how I look at the episodes!

Matt Baume

I enjoyed this a ton! I hadn't ever thought of the show in terms of what the clothing said about the time period and characters, so I felt like I was learning a lot. I'm definitely hoping you two do more of this.

Matthew

Aw yay thanks! That's very encouraging! Was it the "what would you wear to" section at the end that you liked?

Matt Baume

OMG that poor actress, it must've taken FOREVER to get all that green off. I agree that Number One is far more intriguing than Chapel! I do wish they'd kept her, though I love TOS it's such a catastrophic failure of the Bechdel Test.

Matt Baume

Yay! Thank you. Glad you like it! :D

This really is fun. I'm all about Trek so more Trek stuff is definitely a win for me!

More please! As a long time Trekkie, I've absorbed a lot of Trek lore over the years, especially since I started watching TOS when it first aired. Regarding Vina's green makeup, the story is that the department that developed the film didn't realize that she was supposed to be green, so they kept color correcting the film print. The director (& others?) would look at the print, see that she didn't look green, and call for even more green makeup. Poor Susan Oliver must have been caked in the stuff before they figured out what was happening. The female crew members wearing pants weren't considered sexy enough by the network, hence the later mini skirts. They also hated the character of Number One because she was 1) intelligent, 2) in a leadership position, and most importantly, didn't look sexy enough. I always loved her so much more than the later character Majel Barrett played, Nurse Chapel, who was always mooning over Spock. I always loved the makeup on the Talosians, whose alien-ness was enhanced by having them portrayed by women but "voiced" by men.

I definitely want to hear more of this! Such a fun listen, I love the fashion bit at the end.
