Bonus! Gonzo's Many Dresses, More Gay Muppet Guests, and David Bowie's Codpiece

Hello patrons!

Here's another bonus video just for you, with stories that I wasn't able to fit into my recent Muppet Show video. This one features some fun details about gay Muppet Show guests (and also gay allies), as well as the unexpectedly long tradition of Gonzo wearing gender-nonconforming clothes. I've also got a ~theory~ about David Bowie's codpiece in the movie Labyrinth, and oddly enough TWO connections to Disney's Robin Hood.

Also! Check out a little sneak peek at my next video in progress, comparing two gay-bar episodes of Murder She Wrote and Starsky & Hutch. If you have any queer MSW/S&H clips, please send them my way!

(PS: I'm still troubleshooting some video-embed issues with Patreon. If you get an error message while trying to view this video, please let me know what it says, what device you're using, and if you're using the Patreon app or a web browser. Also, try using this direct link: https://youtu.be/Ndoe6xEJUss )

Also -- here's that very fun clip of Java that I mention in the video: https://youtu.be/wDPFt_ajIWc

Thanks as always for all your help making videos, and for being a part of my patreon!

Okay your Labyrinth interpretation was mindblowing. I’ll have to read the novelisation sometime.

Again, I have been trying so hard to be restrained, but this time I think I've got something worth commenting for: I've recently been watching The Muppets for the first time (I know, I know, did I grow up under a rock, etc), and I've been keeping note of all the queercoding that I've noticed, so I can confirm that Gonzo is not just genderbending in his attire, but also in his actual sexuality. In the Leslie Uggams episode, when Gonzo sees Big Bird for the first time, he falls for him. I mean, his reaction is immediately and overpoweringly a romantic one. Check it out, I think you'll see what I mean. Also, in the Gene Kelly episode, Kelly is singing a love-song to Miss Piggy when she has to go on stage. Gonzo offers to fill in for her, and Kelly sings the rest of the song to Gonzo, while Gonzo lies back in his arms and gazes up at him. You might already know about both of these, but I'm mentioning them just in case you didn't! Before I go, just a couple of final things that I was wondering whether to mention, and which I might as well pop in now that I'm commenting anyway: if you're interested in obscure queer history, have you come across the Golden Orchid Society? Here's a really interesting article about it in case you haven't: https://www.makingqueerhistory.com/articles/2016/12/20/the-golden-orchid Also, have you seen the Drunk History segment on van Steuben? If you haven't, it's on YouTube and is well worth checking out!

I guess I wonder why the discussion of David Bowie’s sexuality is so vague when he said many times he was bisexual. What am I missing?

Amy Harth

Well! Lucky biographers!

Matt Baume

David Bowie was known to be very well-endowed, as mentioned by several of his biographers. I really think that is all that was at play here: taming the beast into a pair of tights.

John Mysliwiec

Maybe the Miss Piggy thing is a pun? Like because he's AbraHAM Lincoln? Unsure, but that seems to track with me.

Jay Kidd

No worries. The alternate link works fine.

Girl In Gold Boots

That's such a good point about the way the bulge draws the viewer's gaze! And wow yes what a great comparison of Jareth/Phantom to Sarah/Christine.

Matt Baume

David Bowie's certainly does

Matt Baume

NOOOOOO I thought I fixed it! Well ... try using that alternate link for now, and let me know if it's still causing trouble.

Years ago I got to wrote this article and included Labyrinth because Jarrett and sexual coming of age is greater than saving babies. https://www.cracked.com/blog/5-female-driven-fantasy-movies-thatd-fall-apart-in-reality

YES TO THE BILLIONTH POWER! I never noticed the newspaper clipping in the room or the actor played by Bowie in the picture with her mom (as you said, it was never mentioned or confirmed in the film so blink and you will miss it) but I completely agree about Jareth as sexual temptation and not just because we the audience are trash people and want to get cool with Bowie. I think the cod piece represents your eyes being pulled DOWN to a place that is filled with stemming curiosity. Duh, it’s bulging right at you. The toys turn puppets/characters represent leaving childhood behind. I’ve also personally noticed correlations with one of my favorite stories, The Princess and the Goblin. Down below the earth, the Goblin Prince wants to take Princess Irene of the Sun People down to his realm and marry her. A miner boy named Curdie who represents bravery and righteousness wants to save the kingdoms from the goblins. Here, Jareth intentionally doesn’t look like a “Goblin” like the monsters we heard about in our nightmares forever. He looks…alluring. Like the Phantom, he has some sort of knowledge that tempts our body and mind even if he did kidnap the baby. I could go on forever about this stuff. I love coming of age stories.

Matt Baume

rebecca gibbs

I'm curious if you got any slashy gay vibes from the show, if you've watched enough of it to know.

Lin Kibblemom

ARGHHHHH well at least it's consistent. Let me know if the links give you the same issues.

Matt Baume

Link worked thanks

Nicole Brett

I got the same error. Watching on desktop/chrome.

Nini L

Oh GOSH yes, there's SO MUCH

Matt Baume

Aw that's lovely, now he has the option which name to use!

Matt Baume

Ah geez, sorry about that -- are you viewing it on a phone, and are you using the Patreon app or a web browser? Also, try this link: https://vimeo.com/mattbaume/muppetguests

Matt Baume

No S&H clips to share, I wasn't really a fan of the show, but the first thing that came to mind at their mention was of how much slash fanfic was written about them.

Can’t get the video to work

Funny story about Labyrinth: It is such an iconic movie for me, one of my all-time favorites, that when I was pregnant with my firstborn son, I was planning on naming him Jareth Xavier. My family HATED the name, Protested vehemently. But I was dead set on giving him the name... until he was born, on my father's birthday. At that moment I decided to change my mind, and named him after my dad and my brother. He grew up knowing the story about the name that almost was and has been using it as his online handle for nearly a decade now. LOL>

Nini L

You're very welcome! Thanks for watching! :D
