Bonus! Shatner's Reaction to Kirk/Spock Romance, and Whoopi Goldberg Says Gay Rights

Hello there!

I hope you had a lovely Bastille Day this week, and stormed at least one castle to overthrow a ruling class of decadent monarchs. If not, don't worry, there's still time -- Jeff Bezos is going to space on Tuesday so there'll be nobody at his house for a few hours.

I also hope you enjoyed my recent video about the alluring romance of Star Trek's various male couplings! I dug up quite a few fun Star Trek stories that I didn't have room for in the final version, so here they are in a tasty Patron-exclusive bonus video. THRILL to the story of William Shatner's response to Kirk/Spock slash fiction! GASP in delight at Whoopi Goldberg's refusal to engage in heteronormativity! CHEER for Jane Russell doing her damndest to get a gymnasium full of muscle-men in tight shorts to pay attention to her!

Also included is a tiny little sneak peek at my upcoming video, which is all about the Muppets. If you have any favorite queer Muppet moments -- or really any favorite Muppet stuff at all -- please send it my way because I adore it all. This video's a collaboration with the delightful Joshua Gillespie, who runs the wonderful Muppet History twitter account that you should go follow right this second. Huge thanks to Joshua and everyone else who helps me with research for these videos! I just LOVE learning about stuff from all of you, so please keep the suggestions, clips, and factoids coming.

The new video will (fingers crossed) drop on Sunday, July 25 at 11am -- please join me for a livestream and Fraggle jamboree.

And as always, huge thanks for all your support here on Patreon! I couldn't make any of this stuff without you, and I'm forever grateful.

Matt

Oh that's very daring for the time -- I definitely need to catch up on the show.

I watched B5 when it first aired and I'm sure it was accepted by everyone (who wasn't blind) they were a lesbian couple. One episode even starts with Susan saying to Talia "I woke up and you weren't there. I hate that." So they never showed them in bed or kissing, but they pretty much didn't hide their relationship in the dialog.

ARGH I was hoping they'd fixed the Vimeo/Patreon integration. I'll keep trying to make that work better! Thank you for the heads up.

This is so helpful, thank you! I didn't know about Piggy on Drag Race, OMG

Some gay Muppet stuff that I know of: - Miss Piggy had a guest appearance in the first episode of Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 6 - Rupaul was on an episode of the Disney + space talk show Earth to Ned - Muppet wiki has a lot of stuff if you search by LGBT Culture - There’s always Bert and Ernie!

Great videos, Matt. Thank you. Looking forward to your Muppet video and mentions of the late great Richard Hunt. FYI, for some reason, when I tried to watch this video via the Patreon app, a message came up that said "This video has been deleted". When I tried viewing it on my laptop, I had no problem. Not sure why but thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has that issue in the future.

I do remember there was an episode of Star Trek where Spock went into heat and when Kirk found out Spock would have to go back to his home planet to get married he went to stop it so Spock could stay on the Enterprise. That episode always seemed pretty gay to me.

Needy is definitely a good way to describe it. I always got the impression that the reason why he was "smooching" so many female aliens was that there was something missing in his life. And he was trying to fill that void with...anything willing to distract him for even a second. Kinda sad when you think about it. This well-known celebrated, and venerated Captain, with everything a Captain could want, still couldn't find true fulfillment in his life. To the point that he found some sort of validation only by bedding everything that moves.

Thank you! I do wish the show could have gone a bit further than that ... but times were what they were, and it's certainly further than DS9 managed.

Matt Baume

Kirk was ... well, I think they'd have described him as a passionate lover. But looking back on it, I kind of feel like he comes of as... a bit needy?

Matt Baume

You might already know because I agree it's definitely not the same as seeing them together, but Susan did say "I think I loved Talia" in a Season 3 episode. Love your work.

Lucy Ritchie

Spock only gets randy every 7 years so Kirk wouldn't pick him for a romantic partner because... he needed it more often than that? That's just too funny.
