Bonus video! John Waters' early influences (and arrest)

Hello friends!

Here are some fun stories and details that I wasn't able to fit into my John Waters video last week, exclusive for Patreon. From Andy Warhol's films Kiss and Blow Job to Wakefield Poole's Boys in the Sand, the '70s were a fertile time for the work that John was doing in his movies. Too bad the Baltimore Police weren't so enthusiastic!

By the way -- I've heard that some Android users aren't able to watch the videos like these on mobile devices. Sorry about that! I've checked with Patreon and they say that it's a glitch on Vimeo's end that they're working on solving. In the mean time, here's a direct link, and please do let me know if you run into any issues so I can troubleshoot it.

Also: next week I'll have another bonus video for patrons (and a sneak peek at my next video, all about Disney villains), so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks again for helping to make these videos possible!

Matt

Thanks, that one works! The link in the text of the post gives the message "Sorry, we couldn’t find that page" on the Vimeo site.

Ah geez, sorry it's not working! Are you getting an error message? I'm in the process of troubleshooting with Patreon. Try this link: https://vimeo.com/561893139/cfd4137586

Hi Matt, the direct link isn't working on this one, not sure why

But here's the ironic part about that -- by the time he made this film, and whether you watch the uncut or "neuter" version, everything in it is suddenly as mainstream as hell. Which is just a testament to his genius. The mainstream started to catch up to him when he was releasing "Polyester." They managed to lap him after that -- at least in terms of the content of his films from "Cry Baby" on. He's still a flaming genius, though.

LOL. "Queer coded Disney films." Are there any that aren't?

Jon Bastian

Oh that's a really good point -- yes, his one sexy movie! Though I think the sex is still quite silly in that one.

Matt Baume

He really dives into "adventurous sex" in A Dirty Shame which a lot of people think is his weakest work but I thought it was hilarious.

OMG I didn't even consider yensiD but that has given me a LOT to think about

Matt Baume

Taking a gander at your shelves and I’m smitten by the knit work art and the Tove Jansson book. Looking forward to the next batch of videos, Matt! I have *thoughts* about queer-coding in reference to yensiD, myself.

ARRGGHHHHH okay I changed some settings, it should be working now. Thank you for letting me know!!!

Matt Baume

I'm using chrome on Windows 10 and the links aren't working.
