June Update: Making a Better World
Added 2020-06-03 01:11:22 +0000 UTCHi friends,
Like all of you, I've been paying close attention to the protests happening all over the U.S., and looking wherever I can for opportunities to contribute to positive change.
In these monthly update messages, I usually go into detail about what you can expect from me in any given month. But right now I think it's best to keep the focus on addressing systemic injustice, police violence, and making a better world for all -- particularly marginalized communities of color.
I'll have more details for you soon about the projects that I'm working on (and there's a bunch of stuff that I have in the works!) but for the time being, I think it's best to keep the spotlight squarely on people and organizations on the front lines of change. Here are just a few groups that you might want to connect with:
- Color of Change organizes campaigns that improve the lives of Black people.
- LGBTQ Freedom Fund helps get secure freedom for queer people in jail.
- Campaign Zero works to end police violence.
- The Cut has compiled an excellent rundown of ways you can contribute in your own community.
- Rolling Stone has compiled a great list of organizations that could use your support.
If you're able to participate in actions right now, I hope you're staying safe -- I wrote a guide to protecting yourself from tear gas, and another about carrying shields when you're at chaotic events.
These certainly have been a strange few months, and more than ever I want you to know just how much I appreciate your support -- whether it's here on Patreon, or viewing and sharing my work with the people in your circles.
Queer lives are often defined by loud, vocal, brave resistance to authority, and it's fitting that after 50 years of Pride, this month would begin as it has.
Let's stay in touch,
Matt

2020-06-07 01:13:23 +0000 UTCThanks for the links. I have a friend whose teenage daughter recently came out and that has awakened her to injustice generally. She wants to make a donation to help out the current situation, so her mom reached out to me to see if I knew of reputable organizations- I sent her these you provided. It makes me feel a little better knowing that the generations behind us that are on their way into adulthood are already seeing the battles that need fighting in. ๐๐ป๐๐ฝ๐๐ฟ๐ฆ
