Questions for Perun

Greetings.

Perun, of the Orange-and-Black-Powerpoint Fame, has agreed to an interview. What questions should I ask him? I'm not likely to ask everything posted here, mind, but I'll certainly take some.

Note, I suspect some won't be answered like "Who do you work for" and I presume he will hold to his channel's position of not talking much about Australian defense matters, so be a bit more creative.

Given the rate of usage of certain ammunition types, which seems to have surprised NATO/western commanders, do you believe we will see massive ongoing production of ammo as a result of this, and will this spill over into other areas of the defence industry - for example do you think NATO countries will begin to stockpile heavy equipment as the Russians have done (except doing it properly), or does the cost/benefit equation not work out?

During the war in Ukraine, confident pronouncements have been made by both sides (and even more so by their respective cheerleaders) that victory is imminent, the other side are useless, Abrams/T-14 etc are the greatest weapon ever and so on. More sober commentary has run the gamut in between these extremes. What's your advice for trying to triangulate on something close to the truth without falling victim to the Golden Mean fallacy. How do you avoid deciding (as some outlets seem to have) that there must be a stalemate if both sides say they're winning.

Oisin Creaner

If I recall correctly it was in the video on the race for 6th gen fighters that Perun spoke of the importance of the networks, from the tactical unit of a 2 ship of fighters, up to the General. What would be his evaluation (and I suppose yours if you have or are even allowed to comment) on the importance of the imminent introduction of IVIS/BLUFOR/FBCB2 screens with the M1s/M2s, AMCs, Leo2s, and so on, into the theater? Everyone seems to be ignoring this, or not mentioning this (on purpose?), and focusing on things like fuel types (bogus) and engine types (seems bogus). One can hardly imagine that the Ukranians won't integrate this into their Android based intel tracking system, and DJI supported BLUFOR sounds extremely scary.

How do you bridge the gap between private sector asset management and military thinking? For example while the book value of military aid to Ukraine is in the billions, a lot of the hardware was on a one way trip to the scrap yard. So the real effect on the balance sheet is negligible. Think a café donating food left over at the end of the day to a homeless shelter. It was going to be thrown away, so helping the homeless costs them nothing. How does one explain this concept to a dod that has never passed an audit, or a government official that’s solving inflation by printing money?

Let's say, I encounter some claim on television, in a newspaper, etc, from someone credited as an expert, and it doesn't sound right. What steps should I take to assess, whether my preconcieved notions are wrong, or the guy is talking outta his ass?

Who the fuck is Alice

Australia split from the commonwealth? You mean in command structure?

Question: some countries like Canada, tend to have really bad procurement processes, whilst other countries can have really bad programs (eg Ajax). What commonalities should be watched out for, for avoiding some of these infamous examples? (Edit: if we want to get very spicy, throw in the attack class subs fiasco as well!)

Scruffy

He discusses corruption as a major cause for armies to fail, but what is his take on some of the problems armies like ours have. This being to loss of focus on true mission readiness in favor of getting everyone green on QTB slides or the focus on getting non combat arms MOS proficient on ESB tasks to the point they can hardly do the jobs they're supposed to be doing. It's really neat that an Intel guy can get a 600 ACFT score and do land nav like a pro and make SGT in 2 years, but does any of that matter when he doesn't know anything about Intel other than what he was taught in AIT and is now incapable of training his team?

Sam Taylor

Is the one system that would be an actual game changer? The only one I can think of is ATACM with cluster and unitary warheads

Duane Campbell

Is there a specific video he wants to make but is sure even his views might not find enjoyable? Why exactly did he go from being a gaming channel to the Internets Favorite Powerpoint presenter?

Grim

What are in his opinion the wrong lessons learned and what mistakes with good intention were made by the western countries in support of ukraine (e.g. gifting them equipment they can't really use)?

Reichsbierminister

His favourite tank historically and presently.

Okay I’m going to ask 3, so you can ignore one, he can ignore another, and I still can get a questioned answered. ;) (1) How’s the Land 400 Phase 3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle Program going between the Hanwha “Redback” and the Rheinmetall “Lynx” and how the current maintenance/operational readiness rates for similar vehicles in the South Korean (K21) and German (Puma) armies might affect the selection of a program winner? (2) Considering that Far North Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and most of Southeast Asia is pretty wet, how valuable would it be for Australia or the US to have a light amphibious Fire Support Vehicle in the style of the M113A1 FSV’s that were equipped initially the Alvis Saladin turrets and later the FV101 Scorpion turrets while still retaining buoyancy for operations in swamps, jungles, wetlands, rivers, etc? (I’m not talking about surf). (3) Finally, thoughts on the Australian use of “APC Regiments/Squadrons/Troops” to support/enhance “leg infantry” and what doctrinal lessons there might be for the US Army?

John Cryer

What is one topic you want to discuss most but haven’t had the chance to?

Emeraldleafeon

You have both discussed the outsized roles that certain technological features play in the ongoing utility of combat vehicles (e.g. thermal imaging in tanks/AFVs or radar and missiles in combat aircraft). In the race to economically add combat capability, do you see the path forward as clean-sheet designs with component reuse (e.g. jets sharing radars and engines but new airframes) or increasingly modular chassis with steady upgrades in key components (e.g. the Abrams over the past 40 years or the steady stream of upgrades for the F-15E)? PS: An F-16XL with an F135 engine, modern radar absorbent paint and modern avionics seems like it could perform a very similar role to the F35 in many but not all threat environments at a fraction of the cost on an F35 (cost being an issue for every defense department, but even more so in a smaller nation with an upper tier military like Australia).

Adam Schindler

Was is hard for the Australian military to get modern amoured vehicles after officially separating from the commonwealth? Or were most of what was offered "hand me down" equipment?

Sean S.

There is a discussion about the logistics "cost" for choosing which modern tanks to send to Ukraine but not many details beyond statements as to how unsuitable M1 would be. Can you give some "cost" numbers/details on the tanks currently in scope and would there be any other viable alternatives?

Mikkel Skipper

I guess a general what accreditation hes picked up would be cool to know.
