Greece, anyone?

I’m going to assume, on the balance of probabilities, that nobody on here is in either Thessaloniki or Athens in the next two weeks or so?

G’day Nick, Greece!? Well, that’s not your average destination for the world’s foremost authority on armoured vehicles! I don’t find myself thinking about the Greece Armed Services very often, well, never really. The only thing along those lines that I do know is that Melbourne, the capital of our State of Victoria, is the third largest ‘Greek’ city in the world, outside of Greece. This is mostly because young Greek men have been going there for decades to avoid compulsory military service. They have to stay away until they are older, about 30, I think but I’m not sure. Well, they get to Melbourne and find so many other Greeks most or them end up staying and marrying the girl from the next village who came with her father when he ran away from the draft. Or something like that. I was born and educated in Melbourne so I’ve got loads of Greek mates. They are good people, very friendly and hospitable. Genuine Greek family food is outstanding. Lots of roasted meats and fresh veggies. As to tanks, sorry but when I think Greece I don’t think ‘tanks’. Is there a ‘Greek’ tank or do they buy them all from the Brits or Russians? A lot of the Greek mountain ‘roads’ I’ve seen would make it hard going for large MBTs… it would leave a trail of squashed goats, sheep little old men pulling on donkeys. Do tell us about your Greek adventures. They had an extremely hard time during WW2. Our General Thomas Blamey was tapped by General Wavell to lead an Allied force but come ‘G-Day’ not all the Brits turned up and some of the Greek forces suddenly remembered it was olive harvest time. Still, the Aussies, Brits and Greeks that did turn up were kicking some Italian rear ends big time… (not difficult to do) but then old Adolf sent a large bunch of Square-Head Paras and lots of heavy artillery that we didn’t have so Wavell ordered Blamey to get his people out. The RN did the best they could because Blamey knew a disaster before it happened and he selected evacuation beaches in his first week there. Some got away to Crete and did a good job of hiding in the hills and doing ‘hit and runs’ on the Bosh. Sadly, the whole Greece/Crete thing was a poorly planned blunder that, ultimately, cost Wavell his job. Anyway, rambling on now. Have a great time and you’ve got to go to at least one ‘lamb on a spit’ feast, they’re bloody outstanding. Don’t drink the Retsina, unless you’re keen on hydraulic fluid! The beer’s fine ;) Cheers, BH
