I enjoyed the movie but I’m gonna have to go back and see it with subtitles. Sometimes when the count spoke I would completely miss it even when I very intentionally focused on his speech. Am I alone in this?

aesthetically and sfufff i think it was gorgeous, but i was definitely let down with both the horror and sexuality of it. I was left craving more chaos, honestly it’s probably one of his tamest films and that’s why I was so perplexed. I think this is a very good movie, just not a good horror film. I also felt the score could have used some more gravitas to it, as it felt like a horror of this scope needed some more stings. love these reviews tho

Snow

Completely agree with every critique you have, I'd call it a really good movie too (not great!)

Renee

it was waaay too loud at my theatre too!

lovely bonus ep ty guys!! i also really did not like this one as much as i hoped, i loved eggers' previous movies too so it was a huge letdown :/ on the bright side it pushed me to finally watch the murnau and herzog versions and i fucking loved both of those

The internet tells me the director plans on releasing an extended / directors cut. If you feel up to watching it again it would be interesting to hear you discuss wether it made it better or worse.

is there a lmk discord? would love to join if so

Enjoyed the review, but I'm stoked all 3 Nosferatus exist.

big fan of you guys doing new release films, I'm always on the lookout for discussions on new stuff! Agreed that I liked this film while having the most problems with it of any Eggers movie. The moustache is insaaaanely distracting lmao

i wanted to love this movie so bad but i wasn’t scared besides the suspense & the stache took me out😭 also I can never take Nicholas Hoult seriously because I watched the show Skins as a teenager (iykyk)

100% agree with your take here you worded it perfectly. I agree the relationship with the count and Ellen left a bit of lore to be desired (about it being loud i think that might have been your theatre which is a bummer) -sam

I enjoyed the movie but agree that I was let down by the lack of terror. Being unfamiliar with the original, I was not bored - on the contrary I was very engaged with the story. But not scared, and I regard it now as more of a fantasy than a horror. And I felt then and now that Ellen's character needed to be fleshed out more, no pun intended

the overall aesthetic of Eggers is just so good that I think no matter the outlining of the story it's going to be a positive experience. I did feel this felt even more "fairytale" than his other projects which were all fairytales in a way as well. I actually do think Depp was transcendent here because that character was so kooky beans if you just read it on paper that the fact that she really amped up the physicality is a great decision.

yeah i gave this film 3 1/2 stars as well. i thought it was a technically excellent film, obviously it was beautiful. idk if it was just theatre i was in but it was So Fucking Loud. the first movie I've ever wished I had earplugs for. i did feel like the plot was nothing special or new. i went into the movie with an idea of what the plot might be and it was just exactly that. i felt that there was very little actual horror or suspense, mostly just me waiting for inevitable jump scares i didn't want. i also didnt know what to make of Ellen's connection with the Count. The first scene to me of course reads as sexual assault, so to have breadcrumbs later but no real exploration of this sort of 'dark desire' of hers was very confusing. It also made this final scene kind of feel muddy to me, is this a girl sacrificing herself to an abuser to save the men in her life? is she supposed to be succumbing to the darkness within her? i have a hard time believing that she wanted Orlok because she was so underdeveloped and the discussion of their past was left sooo vague. I really felt that Ellen was an underdeveloped character. Her scenes with Anna were the only real humanizing moments for her in my opinion. I thought it was a fine movie overall but ultimately I was pretty let down by it.
