Freak of the Week: Choose your character

Hello my friends. Please give me all the freaks!!! The animal kingdom is full of weirdos like Binturongs and bobbit worms that deserve a lil love!

You can suggest as many creatures as you’d like. Real animals only please! Domesticated breeds that freak you out are great suggestions. Extinct animals are also very much appreciated. I’ll try my best to highlight them all and you will be credited! Don’t worry if someone has already suggested a critter, your voice still matters!! 🫵

If you’ve already suggested something I made sure to write it down! But you can suggest it again here if you want, it ain’t a crime. Do keep in mind if it ain’t freaky enough it may not make the cut, but don’t let that stop you! For example, maybe a grizzly bear IS the cutest animal and I would love to draw it, but it’s pretty well known so I might not choose it. However, a doodle terrifies me with their people eyes, and never actually got a breed guide, so that would be something I might include… the rules are flimsy but it’s my freak guide and dats how it is.

Thank you so much for being a patron! I’m so excited for this new project, & I think I’ll get to learn about a bunch of new animals, maybe some I’ve never even heard of!! Awww hell yeah!!!!!!!!

Comments

Basking shaaaark! If you’re still open to freaks :3

Beige

Oh good other folks have also said the aye aye, they're so freaky and cute I love them so much

Bel Tamtu

Goblin shark!

Bel Tamtu

The aye-aye. Everyone has heard of and seen variations on ring-tailed lemurs but way more folks need to see an aye-aye.

Bel Tamtu

Oarfish and narrow-headed soft shell turtle

Amy Sennett

Star nosed mole :) love those lil dudes and they blow bubbles!!

Lisa Utzig

nighthawk for sure and I was inspired by your beautiful goblin shark to also request more deepwater sharks... greenland sharks, megamouth sharks, cookiecutter sharks, frilled sharks... there are probably more but those are the fucked up guys i know about!

Krista Yonz

oh my god, i can't believe i didn't put down sacabambaspis. everyone please look him up

Jam

Gaboon snakes, elephant shrews (any of them really), lowland-streaked tenrec, aye-aye, horned viper, bushdog (it looks exactly what someone would draw if they were simply told to draw a mammal), marsh rabbit (why rabbit with ears so small?), gujri goat. So many good options.

Jean Cabot

Gila Monsters, not really that weird, but there's a bunch of fun cryptid lore, like poison breath, with no basis in anything Spiny Rats, trying to figure out which kinds have the good spines that stick out make me think "that's a fun little freak" Giant squirrels, Indian giant squirrel has funky colors, I'm also learning about the red and white giant flying squirrel

Melly

Colugo! real freaky. erroneously called "flying lemurs". cute in a sort of might feed on my nightmares kind of way. tree shrews, rat-things with people ears

Melly

We get these rock squirrels in central Texas in rocky areas that are black on the top half of their bodies and grey on the bottom. They look like two different squirrels stitched together from far away

Margaret Hill

Texas blind salamander

Margaret Hill

The common spotted Cuscus! A strange creature my family has been oddly obsessed with for years

Kathleen Dull

Hope I'm not too late to suggest some weirdos! =) Tibetan Fox Pallas Cat Tuatara (the lizard that's not a lizard!) Tui House Centipede Pygmy Anteater Oarfish Tarsier

Squeebash

Has anyone suggested the tawny frogmouth?

Maddie P.

I think both are cute but Sunfish (mola molas) & Naked-neck chikums are my lil weirdo suggestions.

Melissa Swanson

Omg I have so many, paddlefish, diplocaulus,Mandarin fish, sun bear, pronghorn, elephant shrew, (I feel like a few of our missing link cousins would be slightly interesting probably pretty peculiar), just to start hehe

dogshoes

Irish Elk, they're extinct but things just shouldn't be that Big. Unsure if this is freaky enough though??

Emily!

Eye-eyes and the Barreleye Fish or the Colugo are fun ones.

FenMura

Do extinct animals count? Arthropleura???

Cavarain

please... please... sacabambaspis...

Mallow

suggesting a few of the weirdos ive been able to take care of at my workplace (all varying levels of freak): turkey vultures, giant anteaters, red ruffed lemurs, debrazzas monkeys, southern ground hornbills, and pygmy slow lorises :)

Nick

Jerboa! My favourite little bunny mouse!

CupcakeSouls

and the Sage Grouse!

ookst

the golden target beetle has funny little feet

ookst

some of my favorite absolute freaks that make my skin scrawl: tongue-eating louse, antarctic scale worm, hammer head worm (kinda silly), creatonotos gangis, urechis unicinctus, feather star fish, edestus, dollocaris, cotylorhynchus

Jam

Three extinct and one extant: helicoprion, megatherium, anomalocaris, mola

grumbbyy

First ones that come to mind are sun bears and water deer. I don't remember where I heard it, but I vaguely remember a story of patrons of a zoo complaining about the sun bears because they thought they were just dudes in bear suits. But in reality, sun bears are just... like that.

Korinne Mark

My suggestions are weevil and hagfish! Also votes here for shoebill and goblin shark <3

Beccy

they’re not so freaky so much as they are unique, but: hummingbird clearwings. a moth that hovers like a hummingbird and has clear wings! Hemaris thysbe is its scientific name!

Ves

You're so right. I recently learned they're in the Bible! "Proverbs 30: 24-28 24 “Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: 25 Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; 26 hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; 27 locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks; 28 a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces." I'm not religious but was shocked to find the little guys getting that kind of praise.

Brachy Donger

Aww I was late recommend hyraxes, they're my favorite. thought of a few others: nudibranch, potoo, kakapo (and its cool cousin the night parrot 😎), coati, legless lizard, bedbug.

Brachy Donger

I'd love to see a Hyrax! They're not all that freaky, but most people I know haven't heard of them, and they're so lovely.

Douglas Day

I wanna see an olm~!

Kevin Vognar

Blunthead slug snake, velvet worm, blyth's tragopan, kouprey, greater kudu, houbara bustard, saiga antelope, zebra duiker, yellow pasha butterfly catapillar, halter quarter horse, american baskir curly horse, frillback pigeon, jacana bird, kong vulture, quagga. PotteryWalrus

muntjacs, cassowarries, and portuguese man o wars are a lil freaky! for extinct animals, I think north american lions (big!!), giant beavers and ground sloths (:

Allyson

Idk if these have been mentioned yet, but the Potoo and the Arabian Sand Boa are both wonderfully derpy pals that are fun to look at

Katie

I’ve got some creepy ones for ya: Basket Star (Euryalina), Tiburonia granrojo (big red jelly), Stygiomedusa gigantea (giant phantom jelly), vampire squid, goblin shark, deep-sea hatchetfish, Barreleye fish, fangtooth (fish), viperfish, coconut crab, giant isopod, cookiecutter shark. I at one point wanted to do a podcast on animals (maybe one day…) & those were some contenders for episodes!

UnfortunateCorvid

LAST ONE SORRY I don’t know if this counts but Pinworms literally make me feel ill just looking at them so I’ll nominate them too

Frank Marshall

Also Doodles (dog breed) lmao

Frank Marshall

Margaret Hill

the zombie frog got me thinking about tapirs! why in the convergent evolution do they have those floppy snouts?

Zak Hammerman

Ruth Robertson

Any of the fat tail sheep breeds, soft shell turtles, Atretochoana eiselti, aka the Penis Snake

Monica D

Myanmar snub-nosed monkey (they have the least nose of all primates!!)

Hannah K

Meryl Juergens

Moa. the giant relatives of ostriches. in fourth grade my whole class would pretend to be moa and smack each other with our heads. my backup is Pikas, the little mountain dwelling rodents that are difficult to search for because of another famous rodent who is apparently unrelated completely. they're not rly freaky though

Diddle

Solifuges are super creepy looking critters that are actually really chill! The Tully Monster sounds fake but is a really strange extinct animal. And shout out to my favourite critters, land hermit crabs! The species might not be so weird in the grand scheme of things, but I keep some and those ones specifically are little wierdos.

OHHHH definitely the Gorgonopsid, Entelodonts and Smilodon Perpetrator for extinct ones off the top of my head. Trying to think of some more currently living freaky dudes, and those splitfin flashlight fish, great pootoo, red-lipped batfish and the Mexican mole lizard come to mind
