You're the Budget! | April 2023 Update
Added 2023-04-04 23:18:55 +0000 UTCSo, basically, I'm dumb. I've been freelancing for a very long time now, and this Patreon's allowed me to treat The Canipa Effect as another one of those jobs. It's made it so I've been able to comfortably turn down work offers on the basis that I still need time to create videos. While there's been some rough patches around moving and inconvenient sponsor schedules, it's worked out pretty well, I think!
Hooooooowever, I recently applied for a full-time position as a manga/light novel editor at Seven Seas and I freaking got it! I'm so pessimistic about these things that I'd actually signed a contract for some freelance work a week after my first interview with them. You can probably see the problem faster than I could: If I have a full-time 9-5 job to do weekdays, and I have to finish my freelance work on weekends, where's the time to work on The Canipa Effect?
I figured: evenings. However, it turns out that working literally every single waking hour can actually lead to something called "burnout". Who knew? So now I'm hiring an editor! I've been writing, recording, and editing my own stuff for almost 10 years now, and so I've kind of been averse to letting go of any part of the workflow. But there really is no other option here.
So I've put out a call for new editors and got a massive amount of responses. Some were even from people saying "Yeah, I don't really know how to edit, but I just want to help make these videos" which honestly is super cool, if not very useful. I'm currently working through the applications and reaching out for more details from some of them. My videos aren't known for flashy editing, but I do have strict rules about tone and pacing that I regard as largely intuitive.
A few people have asked about my budget, but that's basically what this Patreon is now. It's the editor budget! Obviously I'll still be spending time writing, recording, and writing shotlists/guides, so I'd rather not spend all of this on editing, but it also kinda depends.
The first video the new editor will be working on is "Nier Automata's Anime Deserves Better", so try and see if you can spot any differences!
Thanks for all the support. I have noticed that a lot of other YouTubers that started around the time I did have either quit or gone on to work for bigger channels, so I really really appreciate your help in keeping this relic alive.

Congrats on the new job! Happy to hear you'll be continuing the channel since I always learn something valuable from your videos. But yeah, burnout is not good so I'm glad you're getting help for them. Be well! :)

In my job interview, I pretty much said, "Look, I'm not gonna end up being able to make a living from YouTube, but I still want to keep it going." and this seems like the best way to do that. At the start, I don't think it'll help with frequency, since I still need to finish these contracts, and the editor will be new, but I think things should speed up as we go. Right now, it is a kind of balance between budget-experience-trust, so it's kind of hard to pick, but I reckon it'll work out!
