Super Late Update | June 2022 Update

Hi!

I usually do these updates way earlier in the month, but I wanted to reserve this one for talking about the new video. Usually I'm fairly open about the videos I'm working on. For instance, the next one is on Baccano/Durarara, and the one after that is on Final Fantasy XV.

But much like with the last Crunchyroll video, I decided that I'd rather keep it under wraps. It's not so much that I'm trying to avoid legal threats or anything like that, but it's more about pressure. If I'm openly talking about the fact that I'm working on something that covers a really contentious topic, the pressure to address every argument and situation can get overwhelming. By keeping it secret until release, I was able to focus on reaching out to specific groups instead. 

I first started planning the video during the merging of the two services. At that point, it had become clear that there had been a lot of changes behind the scenes and Funimation had begun to phase out their own brand. I'd also heard a lot of worse things about CR following the release of the 2020 video, but I didn't really have enough information to make a proper follow-up.

Also, while I was writing the script, there were a lot of dubbing actors speaking up about issues within that industry. I've literally never spoken about dubs on The Canipa Effect before, so I messaged the Cartoon Cipher for some advice after they released their own video on the subject. It's only a short segment, but the video felt naked without it.

I still can't get into my main Twitter account, so I haven't really seen if there's been much discussion on there, but the feedback's been positive so far. I have a habit of releasing videos while I'm asleep if I'm anxious about them, and this was absolutely a 3AM one. I even sat on it for a couple days before just to make sure that there wasn't anything egregiously wrong with it.

But anyways! Next video will be much more chill. Been rewatching Durararax2 for it lately and having a blast. I'd forgotten how good these shows are!
