Doomposting | December 2021 Update
Added 2021-12-09 09:48:03 +0000 UTCIt can be difficult to talk positively about the future of anime. It wasn't all that long ago that anime piracy was at its peak, and the main argument against it was that we need to be paying for it so that the artists can get paid for their work. Personally, I will always advocate for legal options, because although naive, artists do get paid with our streaming money, just more indirectly than we were initially led to believe.
I can't blame people for getting cynical about it all. Anime is making more money than it ever has before, and yet conditions on a larger amount of anime projects are more drastic. There's an excellent article by kVin about inflexible scheduling in anime productions: https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2021/11/28/anime-production-schedules/
I've recently been reviewing 86 weekly for AnimeNewsNetwork and seen firsthand how the show's production has broken down until the point that now it's essentially a biweekly show.
My latest video: Anime: The Broken Industry talked about some of these issues and now I'm writing my next video Arcane Should Be the Future of 3D Anime, But It Won't. It's been very clear that it's hard to stop myself from becoming a broken record. The first draft of the script sounds like a Bernie Sanders rant half the time. And that's absolutely important, but I also kind of fear the day I hear people saying, "Yeah, I don't watch The Canipa Effect any more. He just kept talking about how everything is miserable all the time and it wasn't fun anymore."
I get a lot of requests for videos on people's favourite shows and I often think, "You really don't want to hear what I have to say about that."
So, I have to ask: How much is too much? Right now, I'm trying to get a balance between the positivity and negativity. The Mushoku Tensei and Slime videos were ways of just kind of unleashing some love on a particular piece of media, but it's still hard to ignore the circumstances of the wider anime industry in these videos.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Callum

I'm sorry, but average viewers don't know what they want until they are shown it. You're the one in the director's chair. You're the expert. Don't turn your back on the topics you think are the most important and especially don't stop looking out for the welfare of working animators because you are one of their only voices.

If you desire to improve animation practices then the problems need to be addressed, then there is a chance for changes for the better. Try to balance it with the successes that are also made, people will respond better if your work is not jaded or biased. Thanks for your hard work, quality and passion in your videos and have a good Christmas/end of year. :)
