Miura
: Maybe it can go beyond Fantasy and become SF.

Soejima: Thinking about it logically, that might be correct. It's very clear that for "Berserk", you looked into the real Middle Ages, and magic and monsters are shown in contrast (to that). In the beginning, there are scenes where Guts fights monsters, and after that it becomes more and more realistic as it gets to the story of the mercenaries.

It's not just the story of the king, but also that of Farnese's family, and what the merchant-like people who live in that world would do to get a ship, this kind of story is also depicted.

After drawing (such things) so realistically, monsters finally show up. There's that expectation of "when will monsters appear?", and then when they actually do, the ordinary people who have been drawn so carefully are stunned, I've really enjoyed reading those scenes.

Miura: Ah, I shouldn't forget to mention "Guin Saga" as one of the works that influenced me. "Guin Saga" is a novel in which things like (what you mentioned) are really well done.

When the main character travels, things including the climate, the local specialties or the political system of the land are written in abundant detail, and strange phenomena occur within (that context). The other world that was created is also very well done and the story includes monsters that are like those I conceive. So I still think that work is great.

But in my case, when it comes to design I don't actually have as much trouble as you do for games. We don't create manga by designing it from the beginning to the end, so sometimes I think about things on the spot as I continue the serialization.

Wow, I really appreciated that. And he talked more specifically about Guin Saga’s influence than I’ve read in the past. Man it really makes me curious about his big interview with Kurimoto!
