Miura
: You're too kind. When I started drawing "Berserk", I made a lot of efforts to realistically depict "once upon a time, somewhere" which I mentioned minutes ago.

In a fantasy world you can create anything you want with your imagination, and I think that's the true essence of Fantasy. However the most difficult thing is to draw a realistic world that borders reality. I looked through various materials and read many books.

You know Rutger Hauer, the actor who played a replicant in "Blade Runner"? There's a very minor movie called "Flesh+Blood" in which he starred. It was displayed on a shelf in a video rental shop and I rented it by chance. Medieval mercenaries were the main characters (in the movie) and I was very impressed by its worldview.

The worldview is about Medieval Europe, and I think the way in which mercenaries made a business out of war is very well described in the movie. When Black Guts first appeared, I depicted it with a "Mad Max"-like atmosphere, but getting to the chapter where I should properly draw the atmosphere of the Band of the Falcon and the worldview in which they lived, I referred to that movie.

I watched it long ago. I think it's worth seeing yeah, especially for people of our generation. It's got those 1980s vibes and that uncompromising Verhoeven grit. You won't find any obvious influences on Berserk, but it's easy to see how it along with other 80s classics helped shape Miura's feel for what such a world might look like.

It's been so long that I hear about Fresh+Blood and I still haven't seen the movie... Did anybody see it? Is it worth seeing? :-)
