Interviewer: Being active as an author for 30 years, has your perception of the manga field and readers changed?
Miura: I can say this not just about manga but about all of Japan and the entire world: what's trendy and what's in demand changes every few years. Meanwhile, "Berserk" has managed to last as long as 30 years… *laughs* So I feel lonely sometimes.
I entered this world wanting to become like the authors of the 1980s who drew excessively (1) like in "Fist of the North Star" (Buronson, Tetsuo Hara), "AKIRA" (Katsuhiro Ōtomo). However, I feel like that this path has pretty much been cut off nowadays. While Hara-sensei has continued to have an active career, young authors rarely choose the same path. Because there are few people (following this path), I may be able to manage to keep going, but it's still lonely for me to be one of the last dinosaurs. However, I guess young people want more stylish things in manga because they see things differently from us.
Image caption: As we go towards the end of the episode (2), Guts' dreadfulness and the pitifulness of his enemy stand out: it's the beauty of Berserk's style.
Note 1: He means it in a positive way.
Note 2: "Episode" meant as in "definite segment of the story".
