Thump, thump. In the still seawater, her own heartbeat pounded loud inside her ears. Thump, thump. Eventually, something reminiscent of an opaque white ring appeared in front of her. Was this it? Chihaya closed her eyes and opened them wide again. It was difficult to retain focus due to the sting from salt, but the ring was certainly getting bigger. She could now see that light was coming in in several streaks from its rim. Yes, she had found an exit.
Chihaya quickened the pace of her kicks. With a few more of them, she would make it. But why does this circle of light move at such a slow pace, when you’re so desperate? Once she swims through that ring, she would be breathing. But no. Even after she’s through, there will be a long arduous swim up toward the surface. But she will do that swim. Sunlight. Sweet breeze. Air. Air.
(It is painful)
