Chihaya then peered out into the sea through that hole. Down below she could make out the white of the sea bottom – sunken Yaeyama Maru was leaning to a side in such a way that she felt like she was hovering over the coarse sandy surface. Next, Chihaya turned her eyes up and saw the glittering ocean surface, very far away and almost out of reach. A small school of thin silvery fish suddenly sped across her eyes.
"Wow," Chihaya gasped. "It's like being in an aquarium."
"No, it's not an aquarium, it's a land-rium," Aya giggled.
"A land-rium?"
"Well, we’re in the only place in the sea that has air. We're not looking at the fish, they’re looking at us."
"True," Chihaya smiled. "And we have quite an audience."
In perspective to the vast blue of the surroundings, Chihaya felt the two of them to be small and frail, just transitory beings perched atop the bottom of the ocean.
