Dev Diary #2

Hello everyone! Thanks for all of the comments in Dev Diary #1. I hope you enjoyed the holiday season. I'm beginning to get back into planning and development for v0.17 so I have some more to share with you all.


Firstly I wanted to clarify some concepts I brought up in the last Dev Diary.


Making Sex Optional:

It seems many were confused by my wording when I said making all sex actions optional could lead to a SFW "path". This doesn't mean any story would need to be rewritten. Anal is already completely optional, so it is my goal to give that option to every other sex encounter.


The below four concepts are all tied together in many ways.


Interactive Mobile Phone:

And more, but I don't want to bore everyone with details that aren't set in stone yet.


Objectives:

Objectives are sort of like quests except you only have one at a time and it is meant to guide you so you never get lost or confused, and encourage the player to advance all main characters.


An example of Objective #1 would be:
[X] Lin's level to 5
[X] Gain $100
[X] Fully Explore the hotel
[X] Travel to Caliber City

An example of Objective #2 would be:
[X] Get Kali's level to 10
[X] Gain $500
[X] Visit The Slums

Other examples of Objects could be:
[X] Build the Bar
[X] Build the Sanctuary
[X] Build the Second Floor
[X] Complete a Holiday Event
[X] Complete a Birthday Event


But Harem Hotel is fairly easy as it is, guiding you through the game isn't the main reason I want to include this. This ties into the next two concepts on my list...


Weekly Events:


The Calendar:

I think this mechanic has a lot of potential to be very fun and I've been spending last week thinking on this more.

The Calendar system is planned to be 7 days a week, 28 days per month 336 days per year. This keeps things simple mechanically.


Let me know what you think about these linked concepts.

To be clear this isn't a goal for v0.17, these are just thoughts I'm writing in a public diary. The Development Announcement post will state my plans for for v0.17 and mark the beginning of development.

I like the objective scheme you have above. There is so much content, I occasionally forget something, especially since I have done multiple play throughs. This can throw off the order of events, which probably bugs me more than most other players.

I love the phone idea and it would definitely be cool if we could also use the cameras from it. I remember putting a post on discord mentioning vacations that could be done (maybe put a price of $100-$100 on it similar to going out to eat being $5) and it could be something unique to each character like Kali’s vacation would be unique compared to Felicity/Emma. As far as the events option goes, if it’s tied to the in game calendar it would be awesome since I love the pick up and play style we have

Yep! The Persona and Yakuza series are great inspirations for all visual novel devs. I especially enjoyed Persona 5 and Like a Dragon.

The plus content about the phone is a good way to expand things. This remembers me the phone from Persona 5. The main character, constantly, receives text messages from his classmates inviting him to hang outs. Do you know Persona 5? It is a wonderful visual novel that you definitely can brought some ideias to HH.

Just finished my first play through, and love the direction the game is going in. I really like the concept for the phone and calendrer. The farmable garden mentioned in the previous dev diary if a fantastic idea. I always felt the garden was kind of lacking without much going on there.

I wonder if there's much room for an extension to the hotel. We have the garden for private outdoor use, but I'd love if we could offer an outdoor space with catering. Lin would obviously get real busy in the kitchen, but it opens up more opportunities for the elves to contribute their skills to the hotel. Plus MC could get more opportunities to punish Sylvia properly in the slave route if she's put under pressure serving multiple customers. 😈

Heck yeah! I hope more Nia content is coming up. And of course, Maria's story is intersecting with hers now. I love how this story's shaping up.

Right now, the garden doesn't seem to get used much once built, though I really like it being an option for an Affection-building date.

Objective style things would be great to be honest. Even after multiple playthroughs i always seem to forget to go to the garden in the beginning so a reminder would be awesome

Objectives aren't a walkthrough. The game should already tell you exactly what you need to do for every event. Weekly Events would be delayable and ignorable, but I think the goal would be to do them on time every week. They should happen naturally to anyone who knows how to play. Holidays and Birthdays could be given priority in the player character's daily life so that he always has a chance to do them.

I like the idea of the smartphone, the calendar sounds like it could be use for more story plus an in-game guide.

Tangentially, I also love how much the "main plot" with the uprising has picked up. This is the storyline I'm most invested in, and I hope we get to see some galaxy-brain political shenanigans.

Making Sex Optional: Sounds good fam. Objectives: While nothing in the game is challenging in a vacuum, it gets incredibly tedious trying to figure out which character has events available, so having an easy way to see the next step if you plan to complete everything eventually sounds like it would make the game a lot more enjoyable. Interactive Mobile Phone: Cool. Weekly Events: Sounds cool but I'd hate to miss out on content if I don't manage my time well. Otherwise having more "conversational" interactions adds a lot of personality to the cast. Love it when characters make observations, since that makes them appear to have more autonomy in the story. The Calendar: As above, I'd hate to get locked out of anything by missing a time window or failing a challenge. It can also be frustrating having to repeatedly take naps because a particular events isn't scheduled until next week and the remaining events have all been checked off.

These system will surely add a bit more complexity to the game, if this is what you want to do, I'm sure most people will support you to make the game you want to make.

There is no retconning. This is a game in development. As stated, the objectives main purpose is not to guide. Any experienced players shouldn't need to look at it and weekly events should occur naturally. I plan to expand upon the stats screen with a bio page in the future, I'll talk about it in a future Dev Diary

Could be cool. Though ret-conning a new system in feels high effort / low reward. Are people having trouble navigating the H.H. sandbox? Currently pretty easy to get through without an extra objectives system in place. That said, I love little screens keeping track of stats and events ect so the calendar system looks fun. Those stat type screens take a visual novel up from just being a VNl to also being a game. The character stats screens in particular are nice in H.H. One game I played tracked how much total cum you'd pumped into each girl in ML. Love random shit like that.

Weekly events wouldn't be missable, but they would be delayable. Your goal should be to have weekly events happen asap (if you even care about doing them in the first place), but you can start them at the calendar at a later date if you miss the "deadline".

Harem Hotel is a visual novel, weekly events are just another form of optional content. Objectives can be completely ignored by anyone who knows what they're doing as the weekly content should just occur naturally. So you should have to consider it and still get extra content. That's the plan.

I'm a bit conflicted, and I don't know how to express why. These are all good ideas, but only for a certain purpose. That purpose is to turn this largely sandbox VN into more of a sandbox trainer game and less of a VN. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just outside of the reason why I like the game. I also recognize that the game is made for more than me, so I'm going to try to analyze these ideas in as objective a sense as I can... after work. I have to get ready so I can't go point by point right now. Vaguely speaking, I like optional sex and elements of the phone. I'm unsure of the objectives and weekly events. I don't know how to start with my opinions on the calendar. See you at some ungodly hour.

A big part of side characters being side characters is that they have less content. I have to prioritize where I add content, otherwise I would love to add everything.

Hmm. With four of our main girls already explicitly tied to a storyline of a future elvish uprising, with pretty feasible potential for more, this becomes something interesting... Sorry, that was unrelated to the diary, just a thought I had been having. For the side girls that show up sometimes, in the hot springs and such, perhaps a quick interaction menu (the 'hug/headpat/kiss' one, basically) for them as well, relationship suiting, of course. Our blue room elves as well...

1. Glad for clarifying the 'optional' bits. 2. I really like the phone and its potential uses! Like with the calendar. 3. The 'objectives' and the 'weekly events' tied to them would be a great incentive for new players or folks who like event hunting! All in all, I like the potential for more character and lore development through these systems. Like maybe articles about the world you could access through your phone. Like the map and how you can learn more about each area. Great way to streamline integration. Dunno how hard it would be to pull off, but I've seen other games use a similar phone turned menu kinda thing. Good luck either way!

For me, new ways to dial up more of the harem elements of the game sound great, be nice to see the balance of narrative/adult content swing a bit that way.
