How Will You Translate?

OK - the hottest movie of the year - at least for Studio Ghibli fans - has been out in the theaters for a couple of days, titled 『君たちはどう生きるか』（literal translation: How Will You Live?)

This newest work from the world of anime's living guru Hayao Miyazaki has been unique in the sense that basically no information about it prior to its theatrical release has been available - all we had was this one poster featuring some creature (a bird?) with an utter blank stare. Actually, there seems to be a pair of working eyes just beneath his bill so the head might actually be an ornamental helmet of a sort. Who knows.

And what is confusing is that is it's been announced that this movie actually has no connection with the young adult bildungsroman classic of the same title, first published in 1937. It's almost like we get a motion picture title All Quiet on the Western Front but then just receive a poster of this roughly drawn bird and be told it has nothing to do with war or history. Dang.

Nevertheless, after some Google search I found it amusing that my theorem of title translations becoming utter spoilers holds true in this case as well (lol). So for those who want to remain completely unacquainted with what's actually in the movie until you actually go hit the silver screen, even a mere title Google lookup is strongly discouraged. :-)
