Could depend on a few things, especially her mother. Bad divorce, might be easier to just say he's dead? Idk, normally I wouldn't expect such things between a Japanese person and an American, but we've done some pretty horrid things to each other so who knows?

And she brings doubts that Saki’s father is actually dead. Then in page 105 we see him further researching Saki’s parent. So now knowing how much Saki is putting herself at risk to find closure with her father. He tell her about it so that she may get that closure
