After Show: Using Old iOS

I'm very nostalgic to old iOS, even if it's a useless mess now days.

After Show: Using Old iOS

Comments

Galaxy on Fire 2... still remember drilling asteroids on that sigma male grindset. What a banger.

Have an iPhone 4 on iOS 6.0 If you jailbreak it you can download and install IPA files to install old apps

I would kill for an iPad like that with all those apps

I love the design on the iPhone 4 and 4s. The heavier and the feeling of the glass and metal parts, was just premium.

yes, when youtube didnt have ads.

The internet browsing reminds me of browsing on my PSP then and on my vita now lol.

Seeing the old built in youtube app icon brought back some memories

Mike

filming ipods with an iphone on top of an ipad in from of a Mac, love android

Seeing MCPE Lite makes me want to cry, I miss that game so badly, especially because I don't have a retro iOS device.

Still have one of these. Has SIXTY-FOUR GIGS of storage.

I have an ipod 4 thats been bricked by that lock timer, its set at like 5 billion hours. Sadness :(

i have an iPhone 4S on iOS 6.1.3 and its still pretty usable with a jailbreak

galaxy on fire 2, god that one was good

I actually still use my iPad 2 that was a graduation present in 2014. It's been in a case from the day I got it, so it's managed to avoid any dents or scratches (the case is probably the only reason it's still alive lol). You're not kidding about the updates bricking it tho, it's on its last legs and the Youtube app technically works but not entirely.

Yoooo! My old iPad 2 has a bad dent in the exact same place!

I use my 1st gen iPad as a music listening device :D Packed it into a Beoplay A3 which can be picked up fairly cheap nowadays and the sound is truly amazing, way better than you'd expect and it adds lots of battery as well :D

Found my stepdads old iPad 1 and got my old favs on there to enjoy in that crispy resolution!

This also applies to a lesser extent to Android apps (which can be archived more easily, but which just refuse to work after they've been neglected for long enough) and pretty much anything that relies on a server or some web API. Also, Apple dropping 32-bit support on pretty much everything.

Pc for the win

I wonder how many of the apps don't launch because they're haphazardly using new APIs and not caring about anyone using older versions of iOS or that the app's signing certificates have expired (though on older versions of iOS I think you can just set your system clock back and make the certificates appear valid again). It's going to really suck for archivists and preservationists to preserve anything with iOS, Apple's locked iOS up so tight its going to be a real problem in (iOS' obsolescence date + 10 years) to emulate anything. Everything will go away eventually, just look at Flash and efforts to preserve decades worth of animations, games and websites that were made in Flash. Then again, game consoles are also pretty tightly locked up and even more recent systems like the PS3 and Xbox 360 have working (though a bit janky) emulators. So who knows?

mate... dont steal his pfp

hello

I really should try to downgrade my iPad 2, I miss the old games when they ran well, I have heaps for the iPhone and iPad.

ios 6 best ios

I remember using my sister's old iPod touch. Who remembers the fake Coke and fake Tic Tac apps lol

I'm nostalgic to other things but I feel you.

Am I the only one that noticed that weird ring around the iPhone 4’s camera??

I kind of miss my original iPad. It was basically dead by 5 years though, we used it to death.

I actually used to use a first gen ipad all the time. It was the family game machine and it had cut the rope, wheres my water, every angry birds, etc. The classics. Now you can’t even get angry birds on the iOS app store

Still faster than my old macbook

Yes, remember the days when the good adventure games were actually FREE???? Such as those g5 games. Man the memories.

Alexander Zheng

Damn, memories. Remembering some of my childhood classics like: Aqua Forest Tap Tap Revenge WiFi Warfare CoD Zombies (the first one) Jelly Car

Man...this reminds me of when mobile games were good.

you and me both, it was what got me through my media course that I'll never use

what would you say is the latest ACTUALLY comfy IOS for Ipad 2 before brick territory? have a 2 that I purposely havnt updated in ages. has some issues but still can play Yu-gi-oh & such.

Downgrading an ipad 4 to its base ios 6 will get the ultimate old ios experience

i used to bloody love line rider spent many an IT lesson playing that clearly it did some good as i now work in IT lol

I still have my 2nd Gen iPad (WHHHYYYYY!?) and was so mad as it slowly began to brick. I just wanted to play Sims lol.. got a newer iPad a year or so ago. Oddly enough the first week I had my 2nd Gen I wasnt familiar with the magnetic covers and went to open the iPad, holding the cover the entire time, and my iPad smashed face first onto the hardwood. I’d never experienced such sadness as that in my life. The person I was showing it had mad embarrassment in their eyes for me LOL. The screen was shattered and spitting glass out. This was 10yrs ago so not a lot of YouTube videos to help but I carved chunks out of the rubber ring around the screen and picked out the glass with tweezers. This was how I started being interested in taking apart iPods. Used that iPad with new glass and no issue til it bricked.

It's a perfectly cromulent word.... :P

Personally went full-budget on my apple devices, Awatch Series 3 gps, new iphone se 2020 64gb, refurbished mbp 13in late-2013 (you know, the one with keybord that WORKS), and brand spankin new airpods 2, got a good price on them. Planning on getting the cheapo ipad. As long as it's still supported, I'm ok with that <3. Still on the budget, because as a system administrator for Win and Linux, those 2 are my comfort zone, and my daily drivers are a little bit more high-end...

I still use my 1st gen iPad Mini as a main tablet. I used it almost daily for over 7 years without a single repair. It's really slow, but it still works surprisingly well as a portable web browser. The battery doesn't really hold a charge anymore though, but it doesn't matter, because I'm planning to buy a modern iPad Mini soon.

must. be. spinny

ErickHatesBMC

100% recommend finding yourself a early early ipod touch. Maybe like 1st-3rd generation. I had a few and they were just peachy and useless for basically everything except playing music and videos. Basically an iPod classic but with a bigger screen and no spinny spinny wheel.

Dylan C

A lot more work than anyone can really be bothered with! at the end of it all you still have an old slow iPad lol

You can downgrade your iPad to 8.4.1 or 6.1.3 to make it more usable using OdysseusOTA

I'll have to check that out one day!

If you want to make it usable, you have to jailbreak it and add the cydia.invoxiplaygames.uk repo, from there you can download TubeFixer, which should fix the Tube, but from my experience is a bit unreliable, so I use invidio.us website instead, you can also download Checkmate, Store! to be able to download old versions of pretty much all apps that you have in your App Store library without those 'The app is not compatible with your iPad' errors. There's even a Discord client for these old bois! And if anyone wants to browse the internet on iOS 5, use an old version of Chrome, it's a bit newer and more reliable than Safari.

The iPad 2 has been totally cooked by Apple but I get it. I worked in schools during the iPad 2 reign and they were so common like books in a library. Schools dont buy new stuff very often so Apple had to try and keep them going as long as possible (new apps and security updates were needed for kids) and the result is big slate shaped bricks.

I have two old iOS devices. iPad 2 which unfortunately is running the latest iOS 9.3.5. It's slow as molasses, even with reduced motion and transparency turned off. The only thing it really works for is music. Also have an iPod Touch 5th gen which is a little faster than the iPad 2 ironically, and at least it uses the lightning plug. Still not compatible with Spotify though. And back in the day I had an iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1. That was a nightmare. Since then I have been an Android person.

Matthew Dunlop

hey, you can downgrade to iOS 6.1.3 on an iPad 2 using odysseusOTA on Mac (or on Windows too if i was right)

Same got my iPad Pro but my carry round is my 1st Gen 64gb improved performance using Graydoor. These iPads were built to last.

You by any chance got the old audible app?

I've been using my 1st gen for 4 years now. Interestingly on mine carmagedon just does not work, but Vice City does, altough the save to icloud feature does not work. Also GTA 3 won't start... such a bummer. Also the 1st gen has an incredible speaker built in.

I had to lend my original out to my sister. I don’t know what happened but my screen is kaput.

Nice! I gave my mum a 3rd gen retina that she promptly lost back in 2012, I found it last year in between two books in her bookcase and charged it up and it's still on iOS 5.1, it's actually really fast and responsive.

I still have my original iPhone from 12-13 years ago, its running iPhone OS 3.1.2. Yeah back in the day it was iPhone OS. I can load the App Store but I cant sign in because it doesn’t support 2 factor authentication or that one time password generator. So I use it as my 16GB iPod. I love the looks that I get walking down the street with it.

I think the last 2 nanos just got some rando OS made just for them, since they don't have any apps

I'm still not sure what the nano 6th gen uses, it seems like some kind of iOS lite? The design is still really nostalgic tho with the classic icons

Harrison Wells

Hard to say, some folks ask heaps and some folks don’t

Sure do

You record every episode on your iPhone?

Bloodhound

Are iPad gen 1's expensive on ebay?

To be fair, any Tom's site doesn't load much faster on a new computer...

qdoggie

Recommendation - Magnetic Billiards. Not updated for 64 bit :(

ASBR

Yeah I had a iPod touch 2nd gen and that thing was a nugget to use. Had it since it was new except it got water damaged.
