God I was so excited for you to get to this episode, Domi. You’re right when you say that Willow and Oz’s relationship was very real… which is why this episode is so important for Willow. So I would say it’s more Willow-centric than Oz-centric. It’s the closure they needed, sure. But what’s even more important is it’s the affirmation Willow needed. I want to talk a little bit about that latter point because it’s relatable. The conclusion to this episode is a double self-affirmation for Willow, and for anyone watching that has her as their self-insert character and that relates to and resonates with her difficult situation in this episode: “I have chosen to be with a woman I have feelings for.” AND “I have chosen to be with a woman I have feelings for even when a man wants me. A man I have previously loved and still have feelings for.” Yes, there’s the added complication that Oz still wolfs out and particularly while around Willow - but they’ve dealt with that before, they could deal with it again. No, Willow has made an INFORMED CHOICE. She CHOSE Tara over Oz. Oz: “But you’re happy *being with Tara*?” Willow: “I am.” This is incredibly important validation not just for closeted lesbians - but also for private WLW couples who constantly have men coming in and out of their life that they’re being assigned to or suited with by the company they keep. That they may have even been in a relationship with previously - either by their own free will or by force/pere-pressure from their family, friends and community. This episode is HUGE validation for that AUDIENCE specifically and solely. Respect!

The scene in the van and Oz made the comment about Willow would never make him angry again was a nice parallel to the relationship his friend Debby had with her abusive boyfriend in season 3. Oz can't control the wolf and the last thing he ever wanted was to hurt Willow. He wanted her to be happy and knowing it wasn't him he chose not to risk Willow or Tara's safety by leaving so they could be together and safe from the wolf. Truly accepting their relationship would take time and even if he stayed and they acted completely platonic in front of him the wolf within him would always sense Tara as a rival. The Tillow chemistry in this episode was absolutely amazing throughout. I am a grown man and I still cry with Tara when she tells Willow to follow her heart. Tara has always been and will always be the most kind and compassionate person on this show. Something I have notice on multiple viewings. Willow is wearing an orange shirt and her sweater when she goes and visits Tara. They talk and cry and talk some more. Then we next see Tara wearing Willow's sweater which is possible that and the crying and hugging left Willow's scent on Tara, and Tara's scent on Willow. Which had enraged the Wolf within Oz causing him to lose control of his emotions. When Tara went to Willow that Oz had been taken she wasn't wearing an orange shirt, she was wearing a purple shirt that was a little too big for her. Maybe Willow went back to her dorm and changed shirts after leaving Tara's room. OR maybe while Willow was with Tara in her room she may have found a reason to remove her shirt and just borrowed one of Tara's before going to the library. Maybe she wanted Tara to know how much she meant to her because I have a feeling that Willow had already decided who she wanted to be with when she told Buffy she was gay. Tara isn't a confrontational person, she was really uncomfortable around Oz and his aggressive behavior didn't help. It is possible she had just shared a beautiful moment with Willow and didn't want to be caught between the two of them which is why she said she hoped they would be happy together and tried to quickly get away. Willow would need to explain it to Oz and not Tara. Personally I love how Buffy reacted to Willow coming out. I have been in her shoes back then and believe me freaking out will happen. I had known my buddy for eight years, we hung out, shot pool, shared hotels between Oregon and Florida when he went with me to meet a girl. Changing in gym class or at the pool locker room. My mind was trying to determine how many times he had checked me out. when I finally stopped freaking out and remember this was my friend, I realized I had slid about 12 feet from him on the bleachers we were sitting on. I sat back down next to him and said, more girls for me, hell yeah. He laughed and I laughed and we were still friends. He introduced me to his boyfriend, we hung out and the three of us went on a fishing trip and had a great time. Seeing buffy get freaked out and moving away from Willow, not looking at Willow directly until Willow asks if she is okay and Buffy looks at her and relaxes as she sits down and thanks her for being open and honest with her was a nice touch and very accurate when you learn something like that from someone you deep care for.
