Food for thought about vetting guests regarding data. One of the biggest challenges in trying to find information is the disconnect between raw data and inquiry. For example, the easiest example is a paper document search on a computer. There is no bridge for the document other than reading the physical. The only reason why it comes up in a search is because it has been cataloged and appropriately labeled in a digital database. Now let’s take the digital scan–all it is is an image file. You run optical character recognition (OCR) on it, then boom, all text is now searchable on a computer, and the image is converted into a document, pdf, etc. Still needs to be double-checked and proofread (AKA double-keying). Anything with searchable images, webpages, and just about anything aggregated in a search engine, there is underlying metadata, programmable searchable fields, and added keywords to “guide” a search. With these factors in mind, even in the present day, if a database is outdated, has poor OCR, little to no keywords, or worse, fields are not registered to be searchable, it is difficult to aggregate the information you need. And each institution and company will oftentimes run their own set of rules and guidelines, unless they adopt well-accepted standards like Dublin Core, etc. As a thought exercise, let’s say Army records have poor digital search capability. Even if you want to run let’s say a deep background check on a guest, that is dependent on the capabilities of the database. Otherwise, you will only be pointed to a document and you still need to read everything yourself to confirm the contents even if it shows up. AI is going to be a major player in this. Naturally, AI still needs to be able to “perceive” the data, and that means proper character recognition or born digital documents. The powerful thing about AI, is how it speeds up so many processes as the technology advances and is refined. Obviously, AI isn’t just a keyword search. It can analyze and understand the contents to categorize and form conclusions (kinda freaky to think about) to help process information. It may be worth considering building an in-house tool to scour data, let’s say 10,000 emails from a whistleblower, and let AI help categorize like content, pull threads or mentions of certain keywords or names, determine if the mentions are random or form a pattern, etc. Anyway, just info dumping from my personal experiences. Maybe there’s something to this, maybe not.

Really liked the discussion about the impact, disinformation, and challenges that goes unsaid between two of the largest independent news/information sources. It really struck a chord with me in listening to you guys trying to do the right thing and hold on to integrity. Keep doing your thing SRS. I am also officially a fan of The Why Files.

The conversation about the right and left living in a protective-of-ideology bubble, leaves out a fact about the public discussion. Namely, every social media, "today's public square" , site feeds and suggests ONLY like minded and persons similar to you in terms of personality, ideology, and life experience. There is a willful effort to keep the opposing view off the table and sequestered somewhere else.
