To tag on to Darien's response to Skillbridge, this program is taken for 180 days prior to being discharged/transitioned out of the service which is a great starting point. I have been involved also for many years in work force development as I started my career as a United Association, (UA) JATC Pipefitter Apprentice, a 4 year piping/welding curriculum and graduated as a Building Trade Journeyman, Pipefitter/Combination Welder and later on in my career transitioned into EHS&S. I work for a very large industrial construction company in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, EXCEL Group as the Corporate Environmental Health Safety and Security Director, and still stay involved in Work Force Development for the skilled trades schools in our area. EXCEL is a member of the Associated Builders and Contractors (www.abc.org) an open shop/non union trade school and contractor support that EXCEL enrolls its team members in when they want to learn a skilled trade while working for EXCEL. ABC also has resources for veterans that can be reviewed on their website. ABC and others have excellent skilled craft programs and if a veteran is looking to go into the skilled trades of which now is an awesome time to do so because of the lack of skilled trades, finding a contractor on the ABC website that offers training as I've mentioned herein is a great way to go and make a decent living while doing so.
