AWESOME interview

David Helmbrecht

Outstanding Sir! Let's keep in mind he has his own agenda and certainly is neglecting to mention the complexities and practical nature of his own alliance (or that of his father) conveniently glossed over, even if comparatively better of course. He is also grossly erroneous or outright disingenuous regarding events and the Taliban pre-USA departure. Selective memory, I guess… Also, his alliance has no chance of overthrowing the Taliban, nor to ethnically unite the nation (they do not unite the ethnicities by any means), so, it’s back to ala 1970 and perpetual war, or unless you want to re-invade/re-engage and come back to being a Liberal/Conservative/NeoCon? What I am trying to tell you is you are engaging with a comparatively better person or group, but this is exactly what we did before. It’s just repeating history. Getting back on the same horse... And keep in mind – this guy has every incentive to say whatever you want to hear, or sound western. Sure, slightly better, but any chance beyond controlling a few valley’s or districts, or ethnically uniting the nation – not really? Why did you not ask about ethnic groups or race, or even tribes or inter racial and language tensions? So as disgusting as the Taliban is, why back this horse? Or any horse? Sure, we can but it led us where – a new over 20+ years war? (Granted, it’s not that simple, but…) So where does then end? I do not see you defining a vision of victory - or did I miss that? Making your enthusiasm for this guy’s team no different than that of the USA's support in 2001... How did that work out? You can't be both anti-intervention and prop this at the same time. Or have you come around to being an internationalist? (That is ok, intervention can be a good thing...) May I suggest you have been run circles around by a smart guy who went to Kings? It’s a total show for his own purposes… He is using you for his own purposes my friend. (His speaking about democracy and freedom and women’s/kids rights, is so disingenuous I don’t know what to say…) No matter your or my emotional feelings about our failure, and despite him being better than the Taliban, he is no saint and he is using you to achieve what he wants that is all. He talks about legitimacy, etc. Well, who’s legitimacy and for or by whom or in the interest of whom? He answers none of this, other than in his own self-serving way, with the intent of promoting himself. Make no mistake he has no interest beyond not getting killed, nor beyond his ethnic, linguistic or tribal group. He needs to perpetuate his rebellion and movement to perpetuate himeslef. He has no legitimacy to speak for all Afghans. This is a business for him and he needs sponsors and partners. Its not idealism… So perhaps you all should have a little more respect for the people at the Agency or DoD who for decades struggled with all the complexities of this place. There is no black and white… There is no right and wrong. There is no easy ethnic or moral composition. There is no easy anything. But hay if you think, our past support for this guys grouping (&/inc. his father) in the 70’s, 80’s and then up to and post invention, got us anything really great, please do go ahead and start all over again. And then let’s meet back up here in 20+ years and see where we are and if we did any better... I hope so but I doubt it. Suggestion – read a lot of history, before staking out simplistic answers or making emotional (even if understandable) expressions… This land is not easy and does not lend itself to just latching onto an; x, y or z ethnic warlord… It has not ended anything, not even Peter the Great succeeded. You have been taken for a ride. Proud you got the interview, but he took you for his own purposes. But his last comment is till correct. Be afraid of what is coming...

Great interview! A good father will make great children and grandchildren!

Shawn, you are a wonderful representative of the people of the U.S. we cannot let our reps continue to destabilize regions and leave these poor folks with the bill.

My reception has cratered. Help.

Shawn, or anyone interested, look into Philip Haney. Haney was a founding member of the DHS in which Bush Jr appointed and then later a terrorism analyst at the National Targeting Center. In 2016, Under Obama admin , he testified in congress that he was ordered by the DHS (in 2009) to "scrub" several hundred records of individuals tied to designated Islamist terror groups like Hamas from the federal database Treasury Enforcement Communications System. That info he was told to scrub could have also prevented 9-11. He published a book titled “See Something, Say Nothing”. His 2nd book was about to come out, in the spring of 202. Rumor was that Trump was going to appoint him to DHS again. But in Feb 2020, he was found dead on the side of a hwy. It took FBI took 2 years to come to the conclusion it was “suicide”. Obviously There is more to the story but that is it in a nutshell. There many politicians that spoke out about his apparent suicide and then everyone went silent less than a month later.
