2021-07-08 03:21:44 +0000 UTCHey, furry here! Just want to confirm that it is not an inherently sexual thing. Furries are members of the “anthropomorphic animal fandom”: so, fans of anthro animals. Such as those seen in Disney’s Robin Hood, Zootopia, even Egyptian gods. Humans have been using animal features as symbolism in art for millenia. Fursonas are original characters that are basically an avatar based on animal(s) that that person feels represents them best, but drawn anthropomorphically. Fursuits are costumes that some furries use to dress up as their OCs. Some furries are merely fans of cartoons, some have fursonas, and some go far enough to cosplay as their fursonas. There are many ways to be a furry. For example, I draw cartoon animals, and use a fursona to represent myself in art, but I don’t have or really want a fursuit. Just like you can be a fan of anime but not really want to cosplay. And granted, there are sexual sides of the fandom, as in any fandom. Some people have fursuits that are basically sex toys (and those are usually not permitted at conventions) and there is plenty of furry porn and various kinds of it. I’m asexual, and don’t interact with /that/ side of the fandom much, so you can definitely be a furry without it being a fetish.

I think the sexual stuff got painted as the entirety of the subculture and though I don't call myself one, I know that it's mostly not a sexual thing. A lot of furries are lgbt and/or neurodivergent and identify with having a version of themselves that isn't human bcos feeling othered is a common experience! I've had lots of friends who are furries and I really admire their confidence and sense of self!
