Secret Documents #105: Mosquito Guide - Navigation

Hi folks!

This has been probably one of my favorite sections to write so far: navigation. Why? Because the Mossie finally brings us some old school, World War II era tools for the job. I've wandered countless times in aviation museums, looking at these dusty radio sets... how on earth could they work? Well, after much research... I finally have something to show.

Direction finding is interesting to say the least. You can turn the antenna manually and use the strength of the sound signal of a radio emitter to figure out where the emitter is located in reference to you. The first time I saw this work... I couldn't help but scream in joy "Eagle Dynamics you beautiful bastards!". Yes, my wife thinks I'm insane. Yes, I probably have... a problem. Thankfully, you can also use a visual indicator in the cockpit to orient yourself in relationship to a radio beacon as well.

The Beam Approach system is pretty cool. You use morse signals to determine whether you are centered or not with the runway centerline. Unfortunately, it has only been implemented in the Caucasus map so far... but I'm crossing fingers that Eagle Dynamics will port this functionality over to the WWII era maps like Normandy and the Channel. This stuff is just way too interesting to not use it.

Feel free to consult the attached pdf to see the draft.
