Secret Documents #99: Mosquito Guide - Takeoff & Landing
Added 2021-10-01 11:01:02 +0000 UTCHi folks!
In this post, we see how to takeoff and land in the Mossie. The procedure is pretty straightforward but a bit tricky, especially on takeoff since both engines rotate in the same direction. Two methods are explored, which are both based on pilot accounts. The Mossie was an aircraft that was very unforgiving if something went wrong in those critical phases of flight. I read about some accounts where the navigator's parachute got tangled up by mistake on the fuel cock handles (located behind the pilot seat), which would then shut down the engines if the navigator leaned forward at the wrong time. An engine failure could prove fatal if not handled correctly.
I will write a specific section on emergency procedures, which will highlight a number of issues you may run into if you get dinged by flak or enemy fighters and manage to limp back to base. I found a surprising amount of failures to be simulated in the Mosquito's damage model... which is good... and bad at the same time.
