Rihanna was always THAT girl growing up, and she knew how to make a hit. That’s what we all loved about her. But you’re right in saying that a lot of the songs from her albums, besides the hits, are forgettable and people don’t talk about them. You get it!! My biggest probably unpopular opinion is All For You and Damita Jo are her two best albums but for different reasons. AFY, to me, is Janet & Co. firing on ALL cylinders. The transitions, the themes, the production, the vocals... UGH. To me, TVR and AFY are two sides of the same coin and, to this day, i think TVR going into AFY is the most impressive era transition EVER. Damita Jo, i just ADORE because it is the epitome of "grown and sexy." I genuinely don't think anyone else could make an album like Damita Jo without it being mediocre/average. It may not be her most impressive album thematically/lyrically, but someone like Janet making an album 90% about just being in love and it still being GOOD is so camp and impressive to me

As someone who got into Janet Jackson's discography during the pandemic/lockdown, Janet's four album run ( Control, Rhythm Nation, Janet and Her Magnum Opus Velvet Rope) does solidify Janet as the most complex, dynamic artist of our times, even outweighing her brother Michael Jackson. Each era had its own distinctive looks, as well. I'm an album person myself so I definitely loved how Janet was able to take each song and weave it into a story. Her working with Jimmy Jam and Lewis is the perfect example of Janet having a great ear for music as well!

This is such an amazing video! I really appreciate the breakdown of ear vs. taste and it really does help to put an artist's work into context. For me, an artist that is the epitome of excellent ear and taste is Janet Jackson (I haven't listened to Prince so I'm not including him). Call me crazy, but I truly don't think any other artist has had as strong/consistent of a discography, including Michael Jackson. Even moving away from the pure music: the aesthetics, the music videos, the choreography, the showmanship, etc.. Even looking at her concerts today, the way her music from the 80s and 90s is mixed and changed to STILL sound so fresh as with the choreo. My Mount Rushmore of artists, first and foremost, have to be excellent album makers. There are plenty of artists who have put who great singles and bodies of work, but very few really treat these bodies as STORIES. I'm sorry but a collection of good songs doesn't super move the needle for me. I think it takes something rare to really make a collection of songs and arrange them in such a way that it creates a cohesive album. The most disappointing aspect of any artist for me is when they fail to really go that extra step -- Janet GETS that. It's the same thing that elevated Renaissance to the god-tier of albums. Tbh (and I know imma get lashings for saying this) Lemonade was the first album from Beyoncé that really made me start engaging with her at a deeper level. Like sure, I always loved her singles and videos and she had been doing the visual albums for years already. But I never really had something to sink my teeth into. But watching/listening to the story she tells through Lemonade, the way the songs are ordered, opening with Pray You Catch Me, including her grandma's speech, ending with Formation (GAG BOOTS)... I was like, she GETS IT!! Then we obv see Renaissance and Cowboy Carter (interludes, yes!!! a dying freaking art). This was a rant, but yeah! I also really enjoy going deep into music and it is very difficult to get into the weeds with most people tbh. But I would love to discuss if anyone has more thoughts!!
