Bloodbending is inherently dehumanising. You have to stop seeing people as, well, people, and instead as bags of liquid, as tools to use and control. That's part of why Katara was so against it with Hama. But at that moment with the Southern Raider leader? He wasn't a man, he wasn't human. For a second, he was the monster who killed her mother. Case in point, as soon as she realized it wasn't him, she stopped bending.

2025-04-24 06:02:47 +0000 UTCThey couldn't say Katara's mother was dead because this is a kids' show, and at the time, it was considered not kid-friendly to use words like "dead" or "kill". They had to use words like "take out" or "gone" to describe death and killing. It wasn't until we got to Star Wars: Clone Wars that death was much more overt in children's entertainment.
