Empty Office Tour

I thought a couple of people might be interested in seeing the completed office interior - so here it is:

https://youtu.be/-r7ejCq4ehY

Warning - it’s a bit dull in places, specifically the beginning, middle and end.

The rest isn’t as good.

Just joined patron having watched your content for years ! Love this update, I build a garden office a few years ago and went though many of the same thoughts about how to use it and whether to keep some things going in the 'spare room' office! The Aircon is a godsend even on mild days I've found.

Jon

Ordering a garden office a very basic tick box job. Size of office, Floor covering, roof type, number of windows etc.

Techmoan

Did you get any 110/120v plugs wired in since you were doing electrical from scratch? Or does it still not work cuz it’s not at 50Hz? Or could that not have been a part of the install to add that?

GlenAllan

It's wonderful, Mr. Moan!. I think the "grow the background into a hunt for Easter eggs and references" route is what I'd do (and timely), along with some space with a simple backdrop for close-ups. Too much white all over and it'll get into Severance territory.

Justin

I will be, but I have no idea what that limit is.

Techmoan

Are you limited on how much kWh you can use in this new Office space?

JRSC01

Cozy. Enjoy!

Arthur Robillard

And Southerners in the U.S. say "plug it up" rather than "plug it in", although apparently it's also sometimes said that way in British English?

VWestlife

You are running out of things to eat, Mat!

Robsa

UV blocking film, like what Fran Blanche did a video about, also helps to reduce sun fading of artwork, and yellowing of plastics.

VWestlife

When I had a kidney stone a few years ago, it suddenly made everything taste very salty. I couldn't even use ketchup because of how salty it is. thankfully for my taste buds (but probably not for my health), that subsided within a few weeks.

VWestlife

The door can be re-hung to open the other way, although that would require reconstructing the door frame for it.

VWestlife

Just don't clutter it up with a lot of tat and use it as a background. I like the plain white background in Mat's videos.

VWestlife

My units are open at the back. I have a lot of stuff so I need to up grade myself. I am thinking of a trolley with shelves

MJFJ

I’ve really struggled to find cabinets that tick off all my requirements, so I’m considering the new ones to be temporary, until something better comes along

Techmoan

I have shelving unit for my Hifi components. I put wheels on it so much easier to get to cables so things with wheels on may be a help. You probably know this ready or maybe someone has said it . Anyway just thought I would say it. Best of Luck 🙂

MJFJ

I'm getting a Technology Connections vibe with the idea of IKEA shelving! Sounding better with each new video. Fingers crossed the blood issue isn't anything serious. My bloods were a bit funny on two tests last year. The odd result they decided was "normal for me"!

Brad Jones

I see the acoustic tiles planning and installation guy coming in soon :)

Holger P Kleinert

I made my panels myself, using a wooden frame and a certain type of rockwool, covered with cheesecloth (keeps the fibres in but lets the moving air get into the absorbing rockwool). They’re cheap to make and often perform better than off the shelf sticky foam panels. Loads of information online on how to make them. Googling “DIY broadband absorbers” should point you to some useful resources. They are a fair bit bulkier than those acoustic panels, so perhaps you’re better off buying a few of the acoustic sticky panels and sticking them at the most effective places on your walls. The best places on your walls can be found using “the mirror trick”! Google “mirror trick acoustic panels”.

Pascal Altena

They could have made the door open the other direction or inwards. I guess they didn't really consider it. If the issue with the slit windows is people seeing in, you can get 1 way mirror film that's easy to fit and does a good job. That's what I had to put ion the window to the downstairs office extension I had built a couple of years ago. (so I could get her out of my office in the loft). She complained that she sits down a lot for work so I bought a motorised standing desk and a SecretLab chair. Well, you can guess how many times she has moved the desk up and stood at it. Bugger all. When the Orbi mesh system works, it's great. I have a base station and 5 satellites. Well, it started as 5. Ever year, 1 will disconnect and refuse to reconnect. I'm down to 2 functioning satellites now. As for acoustic panels. Hexagon, you can get hexagons. I don't know why but I have a great affinity to hexagons.

evilution

One of the great ironies, worthy of a Twilight Zone, is that Cup Noodles now taste disgusting.

Techmoan

You definitely appear to be on the mend now, Mat. Now all you need to do is eat your own weight in Ramen noodles each day.

Robsa

Which is funny cause in German half 6 or Halb 6 means 5:30

PipeChess

Looks great! I am glad to hear you're in good hands. I've done some rounds of specialist docs myself and it is both reassuring and worrying. Regarding your space, I'd consider to put some potted plants to give some shade. There will be a radiation component that cooling the air might have to over compensate. Regarding acoustics. While it is half of my job description, I do not really work on buildings. However I have to deal sometimes with chambers where measurements are done and sometimes those chambers are... Rooms or even exactly the same construction you have there, albeit less nice and more greasy. One point is room aspect, you cannot do anything about that. Rigid panels, wall panels and, especially glass. Some blinds help a lot. I tried at home too. Regarding the walls and sound insulation... Sound insulation makes rooms smaller and much warmer. I presume you don't want the air con blasting when recording. What you would be looking for is to reduce reveberation time. There might be some specific apps that measure reveberation time but you can hear it (that is, after all, the problem) It depends a lot on what you plan to do but if you leave the long axis open, I'd think about having panels around the microphone, sort of an open cabin. But you seem take your time on decking it out so you will see the evolution. If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to write me

Raul Ramos

Thanks for the tips, it’s much appreciated. I’ve been looking at adhesive acoustic panels/tiles (I have them on the wall in my current studio) - but given the price coating the whole space with them isn’t feasible. So it’s good to know where to concentrate them. Once I’ve got more stuff in there I’ll see what else needs doing.

Techmoan

As for the acoustics, I had two mixing studios. Which doesn't make me an acoustician but I learned this: You need diffusion, which you get for free when you put stuff on shelves and other stuff in the room. And you need absorption. There's (broadband) absorbers, and there's "bass traps". Bass buildup tends to happen in corners, so putting "corner traps" in the two corners on the hi fi end of the room migh improve the bass response. I would also consider putting broadband absorber panels on the left and right wall besides the standing speakers, and behind the speakers as well. Maybe a rug in front of the speaker to absorb mid to high frequencies, or perhaps some kind of absorption on the ceiling, but that might be overdoing it. Glad you're back and looking and sounding healthier!

Pascal Altena

For the window in the door and those on the sides, perhaps a heat resistant foil would keep the heat a bit down? In addition to the blinds? I never used the stuff myself but I know it exists.

Pascal Altena

New space looks fab. Looking forward to the transformation to your new studio

Alex Russell

Hey Matt please check your DM

Aria

Hey Matt! Great to see you!

Aria

Nice, here in Germany we have a similar thing, when we say half six, it’s actually 5:30 because nothing is omitted and it’s an half hour to six 😄 But this could differ regarding the region the people come from, so there are a lot of other time-telling tactics 😅

Christian Giudici

Have you thought about moving the hi fi to use as a backdrop? It could get bigger and sillier every week.

Graham Parks

There was a very brief time when the thing on the wall was officially a “plug socket” and the thing on the appliance was a “plug top”

Graham Parks

Dawn of a new era!

Alec

Good luck with the audio! That'll be tough but you'll figure it out!

Michael Jordan

Hey matt. glad that you are feeling better. take it easy mate!

Vinnie Mammoliti

With the magic of video making, even a small studio/office can look bigger than what it is. I always thought your current setting was rather large- until I became a patreon and got to see behind the curtain.

Rudy Rodriguez

Glad you felt good enough for the tour!

Mike in Texas

Mat you do sound and look better but please don't push yourself too hard. We enjoy your retro audio content and new studio. We'll still be here when you get you strength back.

Mike Long

A video that makes me happy.

Peter Jensen

I've always been impressed with your confident ability to speak on camera without heavy editing. I was watching some chucklehead on Youtube who could hardly go a single sentence without an edit. Wonderful space. I've seen you at the same angle in that tiny room for so many years- gonna be a shock when that changes I must say.

Andrew Shaw

When can we move in? 😉 It looks great!

Vladi Ivanov

So brilliant. Love the new space and you are looking/sounding so much better now. You're being looked after well medically by the sound of things. Haha - I knew your missus would find the space ideal for. you to put the HiFi into. It's always the way. Good luck! ♥️

Amro

I hope the new office has an alarm system.

David Michael

Half six is 06:30. The way to think of it is you’re half way through the 6th hour. I know it doesn’t make much sense but we’re British. We’ll always be weird. It’s a shortened version of half past six. We still say quarter past six meaning 6:15 and quarter to 7 meaning 6:45 but the ‘past’ seems to get dropped when talking about halves.

Tim Hugall

Just how I spell things is really a choice at this point. Living in the USA, but feeling British, when I'm talking to British people I use UK spellings, and to Americans I use US spellings. And for my YT channel I use UK spellings, because, well, I decided to. It's all very confusing.

Big Car

My wife is brilliant regarding all my hifi equipment, she loves it, my ex however was always asking why I can't just be normal and have a Bluetooth speaker...fair to say i'll never have any regreats about ending my time with her! 😄

Tim Barker

When I post here, I try to stick to British English as far as I am aware. I left school nearly three decades ago, but back then we were officially taught British English, and I believe that is still the case in Germany. Not that it makes much difference in the long run, you get proficient in a language by using it. And with the internet, I am exposed to all sorts of English dialects anyway.

Tunix

When you realise that we've missed out saying "past" in the middle of the sentence (half past 6) it makes a lot more sense.

Big Car

Andy: As a USA person, that half 6 always confused me. Never thought it meant 3:00, but is it supposed to be 5:30 or 6:30?🤷 Tunix: It's interesting to see that you used the British spelling of 'realising' rather than the American spelling 'realizing' so maybe your school teachers taught mostly the British forms.

Mark Hesse

Hope your longterm health is on the up Mat.

allister mckillop

As a non-native English speaker, I find it tricky to tell what’s idiomatic in American versus British English. I probably mix the two without even realising!

Tunix

Very nice place Mat. Looking forward to see some new videos made in that office. But most importantly of course is your health. Keep the upgoing trend.

Michiel Dost

You're looking better - that's great to see. That's an odd term we use in Britain - a "plug socket". Not "electrical socket". I mean, we don't have "socket plugs" do we? I'm sure that would dumbfound Americans, like when I tell them the time is "half 6". What? 3 o'clock?

Big Car

The blinds arrived today. Now to see if they fit. I also have my studio blacked out for consistency.

Techmoan

At a guess I’d say that door weighs the same as a Range Rover. It’s definitely the most substantial door I have. However there’s no issue with ingress or egress, I’m just mentioning the disadvantages of not being able to keep a close eye on a build as a bit of a warning for anyone who demands perfection.

Techmoan

Once the fake grass is in I’ll step on that if necessary, but it’s perfectly navigable at the moment. When it’s all up and running I might only use the door a few times a day. There’s no way to rehang these doors.

Techmoan

Looking at your door and steps problem has me wondering how easy it would be to swap the door over to opening on the other side, so the step layout made sense? Some doors of that style are fairly easily reversed just by swapping bolted on door hardware from one side to the other. (Alternatively one of the large paving stones placed to the left of the door might be a simple practical solution.) But good to see it all got installed with just minor problems during your (unplanned 😢) downtime. Ewen

Ewen McNeill

It's nice to have plans. Great to see you looking so much better. As for the access door, have you considered hanging the door the other way round? It might not be possible at this stage and it might form part of the structural strength of the studio. Just a thought that came into my head. As for the Sunlight/heat, you can get a silvered film that 'sticks' to the inside of the glass. It reduces the thermals inside and does also provide a little privacy.

JemTheWire

Looking good Mat. Don't forget the blinds to cut down/out the sunlight when necessary. I added a window in my workshop and sunlight played havoc with the cameras, I usually do videos with the blind down now to make the lighting consistent. Also, some sound deadening as all those walls will make the sound very echoey. Foam panels are good and cheap.

Chas Large

As soon as you went in the office I thought "Thiiiiissss is" insert random car review here :-) . I'm sure you will sort out your acoustics faster than Doug. Just fitting the blinds might help.

Duncan

Did I just spend 20 minutes watching an empty room? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Not one bit. Can’t wait to see what brilliant projects come to life in here!

Tunix

Looks really promising and we look forward to seeing it kitted out. I could do with a space like that. Preferably about a mile away from the missus! 😆

Paul Hughes

The Bose Wave is fulfilling that role.

Techmoan

No, I don’t think anyone watches them…but especially not the neighbours.

Techmoan

I was planning too…and space allowing, I’ll add a couple of other things from previous videos that would make for a cool display

Techmoan

I know if I was moving my big hifi to another room from the lounge, I'd then want to buy a small hifi for the lounge!

Gideon Jones-Davies

Thanks for that little patreonpersonal visit of your new office! Pretty nice. I wish having a place like this. Maybe someday! And keep taking care of you Mat. ❤️

Bernard Couture

Being at death's door and the medical trial reminds me of an Eric Morecambe joke about his heart problems - I'm going to see a specialist, they say he's the best in the business, if you're at death's door, he'll pull you through!

David Peaker

Great to hear and see you getting progressively better and that's a great space, looking forward to seeing it in use.

Matt Tester

Very interesting to see the new space. Before you start filling it up, I wonder if some carpet would help sound wise. All the best for your scans, etc.

Gideon Jones-Davies

New space is looking great Mat. I wish you the very best of luck with it hopefully you can keep as much floor space as possible and fit all things that you need. I am very impressed Thanks for the update 👍

MJFJ

Good to see that you still have your (British) feeling of humour 😃. Nice workspace, looking forward to see videos coming from there!

MrHammond

Regarding: "Warning - it’s a bit dull in places, specifically the beginning, middle and end. The rest isn’t as good." Am I the only one who finds it impossible to resist Matt's hard sell?

Richard Kanarek

It's good to hear you sense of humor isn't effected by you current health issues. That was like a really nice conversation with a good friend. Thanks for letting us into your life a little more than usual. God bless you, Mat.

Allen Boogaard

When you first mentioned having Ikea shelves behind the table for your set, my first thought that you were veering dangerously close to Technology Connections territory.😊 In the interest of continuity, will you bring in some items from the old "studio" such as the neon cassette, the ON AIR sign and the wall of cassettes and MD players for your backdrop. Anyway, the place looks great and it should be a nice extra space for you.

Mark Hesse

What an awesome space you’ve got yourself there Mat. Looks great inside and out and sits wonderfully in the garden. Was sat here thinking how much I’d love something similar but then told myself I’d just end up filling it with more eBay retro ‘cr*p’ (as it’s sadly called by someone other than me here at home) and my better half wouldn’t end up getting it all moved out from her small bedroom after all. Had to chuckle to myself when you shared a very similar personal scenario at the end of the video hehe. Continued best wishes for a full recovery, Mat. Look after yourself and take care.

Mark Gough

Lovely space, and I'm so happy that you're able to move around more now!

Longplay Games

Funny enough spent couple hours this aft brushing my artificial grass after the winter, come up like new (we get like a moss on ours). I own a nebula capsule 2 projector they are amazing but only 200 ansi lumens

Retro Nick

You're looking much better, even compared to the previous video. Athletic, even. Nice new studio. Love the desk.

CBits Tech

I like your video, Matt. Now you have a desk with moving parts, when do we see a teardown?

Christopher Seal

So glad you’re feeling better. Look forward to videos from the new space.

Paul Mills

Really nice working space, Matt. Hope it will be useful. Do your neighbours watch your videos? Do you gat some feedback from them?

Mark Korp

You are looking better Matt, obviously not 100% but I can see some good color on you and you're a bit more energetic. Man that really hit you hard, I'm so glad you are recovering, not fast enough but I see improvement. Be well sir.

Vintage Disneyland Tickets

looks fantastic, congrats on the new build.

james knight

I loved the beginning, middle and end

RizkySly

Looking very smart! And the new office ain't bad either! etc.

thecreepingmess

Try and hold me back after this sizzling text intro !!

Chris Goulding

Love that self-review 😉. We love dull when you do it. Regards

James(UK)

Mat….. love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥!!!
