New Studio Digs - UPDATE: Added a Youtube link

I could benefit from having more studio space so here’s what I’m doing about it.

A short (yet still verbose) video exclusive just for Patrons.

For anyone who wasn’t able to view this impromptu short extra video on Patreon but wanted to - here’s a new Youtube link. https://youtu.be/obuLG80tQzA

Note - I’m trying out the Patreon video player with this one. I’m aware this means that the video will not be playable via the usual YouTube app on a Smart TV or via something like an Apple TV box.

Have a good weekend.

Comments

I know the feeling. We have a large-ish backyard but it is completely useless due to a steep hill. The city still insists on collecting a lot of taxes from us because of the square yardage but they say it's OK because we get so much more privacy. *rolls eyes*. This new office sounds just wonderful for you!

Arthur Robillard

Finally a worthy adversary for 8-bit-guy’s garden office. Seeing my favorite YouTuber being excited makes me happy, keep doing what you love Mat.

Denis

There better be a Roman mosaic in your back garden. Make with the tessera quick or I’m dropping my sub. This is the Time Team channel, correct?

marcel malfregeot

You would not pass for an Eastern European for sure. Most would kill for a tree that produces a lot of unedible apples they could put on barrels once they over ripe and fall. That corner you are turning into an office would already be a shed with a copper distillery.

Levi Littvay

I'm late to this video What this means to me is that Mat is going to be making videos I love for the longterm!! I don't want to suppose I understand your personal life, but sometimes as I hear about your personal blights that maybe this is the year you decide to retire from making these video or go on hiatus or something. It always makes me sad thinking about because I see you tackle projects too complex for me to ever think myself as skilled enough to achieve. Which then inspire me to get off my hump and take a chance and buy something sketchy or fix something non-working. I'm pumped for the videos you've already mapped out in your head to film in the new office even though there's not a single board yet nailed and a long future of Techmoan. I hope you're planning a fun name for the building too! All the best sir!

Stephen Gozza

£30,000 is a solid price. We were looking to add on roughly the same size to our house and it would've been $100,000. Granted, we had hoped it would add on to a room (much like the room you were shooting this in, thus adding to the sq footage of the house), but due to the easement rules, we basically couldn't. That said, a shed would be much closer to that price (~$37,000 here in St. Louis), which makes little sense since since you'd have a fourth wall.

Randall Jennings

There been zero progress since this update, other than a bit of tidying up on the mud patch, the next movement is in a few weeks.

Techmoan

Here's hoping the construct is moving along or done. Looking forward to seeing the new locale. 😀

Grace Robbins

Sounds exciting! I'm looking forward to more updates on it.

Martin Davidson

I bought a house about a year ago, and it came with a 20' shipping container in the back yard (6.0m long x 2.4m wide by 2.7m high) . My plan is to eventually convert it into a studio. All the best with the garden office build.

OzRetrocomp

I feel that house value issue. I've accepted it. I'm never moving. Anything I want I'm building. It's okay though, I don't mind the house at all. It's actually really cool to have your own space built and the landscaping for you and the missus is really important. As you two get older you don't want to fall on the hill or the weirdly narrow steps. This is not just for the office, but for your health once you're retired. Great investment.

Funkmon

I’ve yet to encounter a shipping container up close from the inside, but it does make a for good standard unit of storage area.

Techmoan

I’m glad you mentioned the stress as I thought that it might just be me who got affected this way with work around the house. It leaves me very discombobulated.

Techmoan

Built your house upon the cliffs of Dover eh? Sounds like a great excuse for heavy explosives. You should have a groundbreaking party. It will be a blast.

CURTISSCOTT

Excited for you, looking forward to seeing the new digs. Good luck with the project, I know it's very disruptive and stressful.

Chris Horry

Nice! For those who are struggling to visualise how big Mat's new office/studio will be, 6.0m x 2.4m is roughly the same size as a 20' shipping container.

OzRetrocomp

We had a similar building in our garden. Tiger Modular was the company, they were fab. Built in 5 days, included electrics plastering etc. took us far longer to decorate it!

John Vocking

Time to dig a secret basement? Give Colin Furze a call?

Wolf

Does this couple live in their storage locker?

Billy Kaye

There’s nothing to plug it into. The router is in an upstairs bedroom. I’d have to run a wire from there, out through the exterior bedroom wall, down the side of the house and under a patio, before any new bit for the garden office. Sounds like a hellish, time consuming nightmare. If this were necessary I’d rather cancel the whole job.

Techmoan

Since you're running electric, just run the Cat7. Future-proof for an extra 10 quid.

Peter Rogers

That makes sense.

Chris Tennant

You damn right it’s interesting. I’m crazy excited for you to be honest. Been apart of the Techmoan world for years and I know you find it tough sometimes in the small space you have. Soooo happy for you, matey 😁 Lee

Lee Coles

“Don’t seem right in the head” 😂 ahhhh my dad and uncles used to say this!

Lee Coles

Garden offices have to adhere to planning regs. I think total height for all of them has to be less than 2.5m.

Techmoan

Attic above studio so you can clear out storage unit?

Chris Tennant

So exciting!!!! Are you inspired by 8-bit guys new studio?

Chris Tennant

Mat, this is excellent news! Congrats, man! A couple of years ago we chatted a bit about your storage and how much it was costing... and I thought: "Geez... I cannot afford even half of such expense for my YouTube channel." Now I feel a bit embarrassed because we ended up buying (well, mortgage) a BIG house out of Madrid - and I have a 50 square meter space to be my studio... I've been spoiled and I am not using it appropriately yet. I always remember you: Mat would be doing a better work with this space I have now! To infinity and beyond. Indeed, space is always an issue.

Geek Detour

Very exciting!

Chris Jeter

Congrats on the Garden office. Hope all goes well.

Killerhund

Greatly relieved to learn your wazoo is well guarded.

Joseph Dougherty

Wow, this is looks super exciting! I hope the build goes smooth, very excited to see how it ends up!

mav6771

As someone living in a flat, with two kids and a Wife who eyes the stereo suspiciously, I can only agree on the route taken.

Raul Ramos

Wish you well with the project and looking forward to following the progress.

Rob Holt

It's that good, eh?

Asaf Sagi

It's just one room, not a whole house. I'm sure it'll be fine

Asaf Sagi

Mat would love nothing more 😅

Asaf Sagi

I can't help but think of the trials and tribulations of the shed of Steve from the Mac84 channel (friend of TDNC s Colin)

Asaf Sagi

That’s what I was planning on, taking a few pictures of key moments

Techmoan

Nice plan for your garden! Cant's wait to see the results! Just a little sidenote on the Patreon-Player: At about 12:30 into the Video the automatically generated subtitels thought it would be fancy to switch to welsh language :-D I don't know why, but switching off an on again fixed it.

Christian Giudici

I use neither. I just cast my phone screen to the Tv

Alec

New Studio DIGS...I see what you did there.

David Butler

Reading back my comments today and I feel really silly. Sorry.

Grace Robbins

Excellent decision and looking forward to seeing the result. Good shout on the heat pump ac unit- assuming it’s an installed split unit, hopefully it can heat too as that’ll be toasty and efficient!

Jon B

Everyone needs a shed. It might be worth considering how you are going to get large things in and out. Maybe worth replacing the steps with a ramp appropriate for sack wheels.

Andy Robinson

Welcome to the club. :-)

The 8-Bit Guy

Yes that's a very good idea.

Gadgetman

Not to my TV you can't. So I should buy a new TV when there's nothing wrong with it?

Gadgetman

Since you have to get power cables over anyway: Get some Cat7 outdoor cables burried along, less problems on the long run than wifi-meshing.

Maik Bryant

What does Techmoan and interstellar travel have in common? Space is an issue

Tyler

I suggest we organise a meet up one day ,would be fun

allister mckillop

Harder to stream on a box like Roku or Fire Stick

Bryan Hamill

And every woman needs a she-shed. 😁

Grace Robbins

Great news, should be brilliant. Last year I did something similar, whereby I repurposed our damp and draughty 1970's garage. Its not an office but a DIY workspace and dry storage area with insulated walls, floor and roof. Done very cheaply too keeping the original block walls, but extending forward inline with the front of our house. Actually just had a thought, not sure how committed you are to your new office, but if your garage is on the side of your house it may be worth considering this option. I've now got a floor space of approx 7m x 2.6m and all in cost of approx 17k. If your interested I can let you have some pics.

Kramer

Very exciting news! I see someone else suggested a time lapse documentation. Totally understand your not wanting to get footage of the folks building, but perhaps a photo in the morning/evening before or after they arrive could work. I'm fascinated to see how it goes up. But what do I know? The structure might go up in one day and it's a moot point. Either way, it's an excellent solution to your problem, and I really enjoyed the video!

Bill Smartt

Hi Mat. Like the others on this tread, I’m excited for you! This will be a real game changer. As for the patreon player, works okay but you can watch the video WITHOUT logging in. Don’t know if that’s a problem.

Chris Burns

Yeah I'm interested in who the company is. We've talked about getting an office in the garden for my other half as she switches between our dinning room in the winter and our lean-to/conservatory in the summer. Neither of which are ideal.

Mark Elliott

Every man needs a shed!

allister mckillop

Good luck to you. I hope everything goes the way you plan.

J.R. Locke

Good luck with the new office. The Patreon player seems to have improved. Watching on my iPad with AirPods Pro it even supports positional audio, as I move my head you shift between ears.

Phil Collins

That's exciting news. I think you can expect from it something like the 8-bit guy did. His videos only changed in the way that he made videos about the new place itself, becasue he added solar panels and off grid capability. Something you might consider as well depending on how good is your location for it. Looking forward to updates about it.

Holger P Kleinert

Looking forward to seeing your new garden kffi e and thing you haven't been able to show us before

Ellis Garbutt

Thanks for the YouTube version

Ian Cull

That's really good, I would be happy with that👍

LANDLINEMAN.com

I’ve just been out in the garden with my iPad and run Speedtest at the furthest back corners and got 312Mbps down and 83.5Mbps up, so providing the structure doesn’t do anything catastrophic to the reception I should be OK with my existing WiFi. If there is a problem I’ll try a repeater.

Techmoan

Who designed that garden? Are the houses behind you much higher than you? I suspect this is the usual 70s terrible housing estate like I grew up in but what you’re doing sounds a big improvement. Good luck! Hope it all goes well!

Kirk Northrop

Excited for the new look. Good luck with the setup!

Aairria

We had a simular quote fir similar footage built to a standard you could happily reside all tear round. That was about 3 years ago in the SEt, so depending on spec and inflation etc it sounds about right given you're in the NW.

Ironbridge

What about network? Will you run a cat7 or a fibre out there?

LANDLINEMAN.com

It'll definitely be alarmed and I've got security cameras out the wazoo to see the comings and goings of animals around the house and when someone knocks on the door - theres no movement near that doesn't already get logged. The back garden is inaccessible from all directions without someone already breaking into one of the houses on the street, then breaking out of the back and then jumping over multiple 5ft fences. It seems unlikely they'd do all that...but yes it's all monitored.

Techmoan

I’m also seeing the good information part and would really like to see updated videos under construction 🚧 👍🏻 The 8bit guy did really detailed information videos talking about he’s plans building he’s thing surley getting some constructive feedback

Jørn Birkeland Rosengren

I had no idea how much they cost - I anticipated between 20-30 and I think I could have got one for less if I'd cheaped on a few of my requirements - but I liked the look of this one and wanted it done properly.. and most important easily. Not all companies would be able to get their type of buildings installed by going via a regular house door and most seem to require a concrete foundation as well ...so the lack of hassle was definitely worth something. It turns out that tiny (and mostly useless) summerhouses can cost silly amounts, so in comparison to something one of these it seemed reasonable https://www.johnlewis.com/ornate-garden-grande-deluxe-chic-garden-summerhouse-pod/p5383601 I'm planning on trying to use WiFi - In the new office I'm only throwing distance from the router inside the house, I might need a new repeater but I think I should be fine. I'm not reliant on a fast ping or anything like that - I just tend to need basic regular speed internet access but once or twice a week I'll upload a 10GB file which I could always do in the house if necessary.

Techmoan

Good luck, sir! Can't wait to see the hip new setup

Michael Jordan

That's what I thought too - so it seemed wise to ease everyone into it.

Techmoan

If you just in the future started using a workspace, or better more interesting name for it, a Studio i would wonder how it came to be

Jørn Birkeland Rosengren

That's really good news, Mat, and a creative way to use some otherwise unenjoyed land. I was a bit shocked at the cost - as you were talking, I was thinking that would cost you about £20k - so, I guess I am behind the times. And for £30k, you should get what we used to refer to as 'a pukka job' i.e. done properly with no corners cut. Looking forward to seeing the finished building. PS Are you going to get your broadband fibre line extended into it - a bit far away for decent wi-fi from the house, I'd guess?

Roland Bogush

If my experience of British construction standards are anything to go by then it will be too hot when the sun shines and too cold once out of the sun. Some heat pump companies in the UK have to sell combined heat pump / gas heating systems because the heat pump alone cannot pump in enough heat in into a British house to make up for how quick the heat escapes.

Richard Bevan

I’m not happy recording other people going about their business and then sharing it online. If I were building it on my own that would be fine.

Techmoan

Unfortunately this is the largest size that the land can accommodate.

Techmoan

I’ve had a look at the General Permitted Development Order 2015, which is the document which states what developments do not require planning permission, and it looks like you’re OK. Part 1 of Schedule 2 deals with Permitted Development for dwelling houses and Class E of that Part deals with outbuildings. Here’s a link. Note that Part E does contain a few exceptions on the following pages. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/596/schedule/2/part/1/crossheading/class-e-buildings-etc-incidental-to-the-enjoyment-of-a-dwellinghouse/paragraph/E/made Obviously if there’s any doubt, you’ll want to get your own professional advice (or rely on your contractors – get it in writing). There may also be a need for Building Control. Again, one for your contractors. Having recently got ‘surround sound’ myself (albeit not a retro 70s quad system!), I think it’s great and I wish you the best for your project. Hope the planning stuff is of interest to someone. In terms of Patreon video player, I watched it on the iPhone and streamed the sound to my home cinema amp while scrolling through the comments. No problems but I don’t (yet) own anything I can cast the video to.

Steve Day

Exciting stuff! Is a great idea to use an inverter split system air conditioner (heat pump). Super efficient heating, and cooling for the occasional warm days. You won't need a big one. I'm in Australia but have a few electrician mates in UK who've worked or built these offices etc. Cheers

Jim Hooke

Thanks for the tour of your conservatory and back garden. Pretty neat to see behind the scenes a bit. I was wondering why you wouldn't use more of the slopy grass to make a bigger office. Maybe I'm being an American about it (I'm sitting in my roughly 4m x 4m home office), but 2.4m just seems a bit narrow. If you terrace the grass and maybe put a few ornamentals there, with the wood backdrop of the office, it'd make your patio quite a nice spot, no?

Kevin Mitchell

Pretty exciting project ! Another good reason to renew my Patreon payment infos. Please keep us updated :)

Bernard Couture

Thats exciting news !

Adrian Whitfield

Congratulations on the new upgrade! I hope it's just what you hoped for. I look forward to you getting a slightly easier life - shooting life and extra "brownie"/husband points from "The Missus" for allowing her to have that space she always wanted to use for something-or-other. Patreon video is fine - nothing bad or good to say about it.

Amro

Have you thought of setting a time lapse camera up and maybe doing some update videos during the build? Would be interesting to see the process.

Brent Davies

Exciting times. Looking forward to see how this brings a new look to the channel. Hope the build goes well, best of luck 👍

Brent Davies

I’m probably need to keep using it for a while as the new space gets organised, but eventually it’ll revert back to a bedroom.

Techmoan

Billiards table 😀

Grace Robbins

Congrats on the new office, it will make your life better, then it's worth the money. Looking forward! The Patreon player is fine for me, I watch either on tablet or on the big screen that happens to be my second PC monitor. Remote controlled with a Rii mini keyboard.

CheeseParis

A great development Mat, I just spent the day running an ethernet cable into my sister's home office of around the same size. Also built her office furniture and it's a lovely space. It does echo a bit, it's better with carpet and furniture but you will probably need some acoustic panels.

Matt Tester

I thought I was having a stroke for a second there.

Mike Pumphrey

Sounds like it's going to be far more substantial than a Portakabin, as I've worked in those, and the floor literally bounces! I'm envisaging a wall of Kallax shelves like Technology Connections!

Brad Jones

One benefit of having shelves of oddly shaped items in a room is that it *really* cuts down on the echo in the room. Easy "sound treatment".

PileOfStuff

You'd be a social media star if you bought one of those $10k tiny prefab homes on Amazon with no heat, no insulation, and walls about as resistant to high winds as the structure RIchard Hammond built from his Land Rover in Top Gear's Campervan Challenge.

VWestlife

Exciting times, a new era of Techmoan! Though I'll probably miss seeing videos in the old space too for a bit. What will you do with the old spare room space?

Josette Reynolds

It’s a bit tricky as these are working people who will just want to do their job in peace and off camera, I’ll snap a few images when no one is around.

Techmoan

That’s very true. I could definitely benefit from a pending area.

Techmoan

Great video, thanks for posting. I'm in the market for a garden office, is the company you've purchased the office from a national company or local? If the former, would you mind sharing who it is?

Chuckatron

Ok will give it a try

Robert B

Good choice, absolute classic! I prefer the simple games with just a couple of buttons. I struggle with modern consoles, just too many buttons.

RobotOnline

I 'helped' a friend build a 5m x 2.5m 'kitset' garden shed a couple of years ago. A dividing wall separated it into a small workshop on one side and another room that just fits a cot-bed for occasional guest overflow and, most imortantly, a weekly gathering of 5 - 6 old blokes with red wine, there to discuss prostates, old times and 1950 MGTD gear boxes. Your 'shed' will be much more impressive than the slapped-up one I visit, but I'm very keen to watch its progress and final outcome. Cheers to you and your new garden studio!

Peter Kerwin

Very tempting. We’ll see how much space there really is. I have to be careful not to get too giddy with it otherwise there will be a pinball table in there before I know it.

Techmoan

I’ve had it a few years now, it’s an Asteroids one.

Techmoan

Forgot that Chromecast works with Patreon, because I'm an eedjit. Still prefer YouTube, but no big deal (and it's your Patreon, not mine, of course). Can't wait to see the new office, Mat. A brave new world awaits!

Gary McConnell

I absolutely love these videos . Really look forward to them. Thank you so much.

A H

Looking forward to seeing the new space, Mat! Which Arcade1up cab do you have? I picked up the Star Wars cab a couple of years ago.

RobotOnline

Sounds very exciting - look forward to seeing it!

George the Dead Hard Drive

You can cast Patreon/screen mirror the player from your device to the Tv

Alec

You can cast/screen mirror it from your device to your Tv.

Alec

Never had an issue with Patreon player. Why do people hate it so much?

Alec

You could have a jukebox! 😀 🎈

Stephen Bell

I enjoyed hearing about the process of selecting your studio. Looking forward to seeing how you set up the new space. As far as Patreon goes, I already have to do a workaround to get it on the YouTube Apple TV App. This simplifies things by eliminating the option. I don’t hate it. One other benefit. I never spend time in Patreon, but it does make engagement easier. Usually, I’m just hopping into Patreon long enough to start the video and get it in my YouTube viewing history.

Patrick Joseph

I'm probably an edge case, but I prefer the Youtube player simply because I put everything on the watch later list, and get around watching most videos 2-3 weeks after they are uploaded. Having it on Patreon prevents me from doing that, making it less convenient.

Sean Kennedy & Katharine Huseby

Prefer YT personally since I watch most content on the TV

Robert B

Congrats on the upgrade, looking forward to the updates!

Paul Schuur

It sounds like it might be. Wood with a foam inner and cladding on the outside. They’re pretty much the best way to build buildings like garden rooms.

Matt Harrison

They use panels made up of a sandwich of layers, I’m not sure what a SIP panel is and it’s not something they refer to anywhere.

Techmoan

Sorry, no opinion on the video player. I wish you all the best on the new space. I look forward to what you mentioned - stuff in the background that may or may not have been covered in the past. However.... if you do that, expect many "what is item B, 3 in from the left?" I will enjoy seeing this as it happens! Chas Large had a good idea, the time-lapse one. Certainly make a few quick updates easier for you. P.S. Mr. Jones-Davies hit it with "Garden Office Studio". interesting door-sign idea there.

Stephen Hamme

Is the garden office one of those SIP panel ones?

Matt Harrison

Hi Joe, I watched on an android phone and was able to pause.

Simon Arnold

Can't pause the video.

Joe Barrett

Good luck Mat! Seems like an excellent solution to the space issue!

Tore Børseth Bjørnsen

There’s no drywall/plasterboard the walls come pre formed as a sandwich of layers.

Techmoan

Great update. I look forward to seeing your new Garden Office Studio in future videos. I am very interested to see updates as the studio build progresses.

Gideon Jones-Davies

Digging down sounds like a recipe for flooding. Read up on what happened to Vince Clark's synthesizers.

Duncan

No opinion on the Patreon player, but advance congratulations on the new garden office. I hope it turns out to be better than you expect. It certainly sounds like you're going about it the right way; not cutting corners or settling for something less than you want. I'm sure you've thought about this, but let me toss in the thought: With what you'll be keeping in that office, additional security/alarms could help protect the investment.

Joseph Dougherty

If it’s exclusive to Patreon then I can’t play it on my TV so it might as well not exist, since Patreon haven’t bothered to support Smart TVs. I don’t understand the logic of only actual Patrons can play it. I’m an actual Patron but I can’t play it on my TV it unless I can open it in YouTube. I’m not interested in watching your videos on a phone or a tablet. It’s the 40” Smart TV or nothing. If it goes Patreon only, with regret I’ll unsubscribe.

Gadgetman

Congrats on the new space! I wish you great success with it.

Longplay Games

Be careful. Matt. There are rules about distance from the house and distance from boundaries as well as height as you say. Don’t rely on the builders-check it yourself. I write as a Retired conveyancing solicitor…..

Jeffrey Finegold

I’m excited for you! Should make workflow easier when you have things in bits awaiting parts, you’ll hopefully have space to leave them be whilst you move on with something else. Great update.

Darren Porter

I despise the Patreon only video player.

Chris Harvey

Very exciting to have a dedicated YouTuber studio. I'm very jealous. Please document the build and fitting out. The 8-bit guy did that and it was very interesting.

CBits Tech

Nic update Mat, can you setup a camera to do a video of the building of the office, one frame every 10 seconds or similar, would make the next update a bit busier,. Maybe a raspberry pi stand alone?

Chas Large

Exciting times! I'm really curious for the end result. And of course please keep us informed of any milestones along the way!

Martijn Valk

excellent news about your new office, I think you deserve a proper space to make the videos after all these years. well done!!

Toby Chapman

Turns out my Android TV has a Patreon playing app....who knew?!

Phil Sheldon

The patreon player wont play in the background while you scroll down on the same page, what's the point.

Dan Dastun

Wow, this is going to be great! The only suggestion I have is to prewire quality speaker wires throughout the office before putting up that drywall. And plenty of outlets too.

Rudy Rodriguez

Replying to myself; After reading the comments and realising the patreon app can cast to my TV I've changed my vote. Previously I had to click on the youtube link in patreon to get it 'started' and then on my TV find it in my youtube history. Using Patreon is probably no easier than that but allows you to keep vids a bit more exclusive.

Felix

Will it have a small Kitchen. Or will you go home for lunch?

Graham Shaw

The video player works well, at least it plays and pauses when I want and can be resized nicely so can have you beaming at me on one side of my huge desktop screen and surf on the other side but usually I tend to watch your stuff in the lounge on the big TV when the family has gone to bed.

Felix

Exciting addition to support your work. FWIW I generally watch YouTube Premium in its app on an iPad and Patreon in Safari not the app. I wouldn’t go so as to say I hate the Patreon video player but its functionality is limited and when in full screen mode the controls trigger the iPad nav interface that is quite annoying. If you go Patreon only to protect your IP/ offer then I still be here using it, I just rather use the YouTube app. Maybe I’ll finally try the Patreon app. I’ll stop waffling now.

Gareth R

I don’t have a clue, but like all tax if it’s due, then it’ll need to be paid, just ask Wesley Snipes.

Techmoan

Fortunately I don’t have any friends so there’s no need to entertain anyone. In the twenty five(?) years I’ve lived in this house there haven’t been any get togethers. As for digging down, with no access for machines and a house built on what’s effectively the side of a quarry, (the only thing beneath me is rock) that’s not an option.

Techmoan

There’s something to do with the size in relation to the house and the height is very important - I just leave it to the pros.

Techmoan

Moancave sounds too dirty :D

RTheren

Nice! I presume it doesn't need planning permission, as it's classified as a shed?

Big Car

This is fantastic news! I very much look forward to the future. Congrats!

[redacted]

Brilliant news Mat, and I know that having a lack of space is often such a demotivating factor that can make us go into treading water mode. Looking forward to seeing it and the new Techmoan home! Can I hear Mrs Techmoan partying in the background???

Mark Walsham

Exciting! Shame the price of building anything has increased so much. 8 years ago I had a 8m x 7m single storey brick workshop built with pitched tiled roof and a 20m concrete driveway. Less than 20K. 2 years ago I had a 4m x 4.5m single story brick extension built with a flat roof. £27K How! It's about a 3rd the size. "It's because of Brexit mate". Shut up. Problem is that builders have all learn that they can up their prices.

evilution

Funny. A fire pit is the last thing I would EVER consider building in an office or any other room.

Michael Wehr

Great decision. I'm happy for you. Looking forward to a new video when the new office is ready.

Michael Wehr

Oh Mat I’m so pleased for you! This is all sounds very exciting and I cannot wait to see this!

Maximilian French

TechMoan gets a mancave - or a “MatCave” 😀 Seen quite a few of these pop up in neighbour’s gardens the last couple of years (another being built right now). I just look on in envy 😕

GrumpyToffee

One way I would look at the Office price would be to think about it if you were renting some place, if you were to rent a space and it was £500 a month, after 5 years, it cost you the same and you get to keep it. If it adds any value to the house, it's a bonus then.

Jamie Cruickshank

Sounds great look forward to the first vid from it.

AzoriusMage

Well, my first reaction is that what you have planned certainly is better than what you currently have so I tilt my hat to that. I hope you've considered things like adding a fire pit so that you can enjoy the company of good friends on a cool day. The other thing that sprang to mind was whether or not you could dig down several feet and have your space turn into a double decker so that you'd have overhead use as well. It's very likely that you could even sell the soil to somebody who needed Terra firmer in their backyard.

CURTISSCOTT

What a great idea.

Peter Jensen

I see Colin Furze is almost done with his garage. I'm sure he is up to building you a bunker if this goes wrong :)

springbay

Déjà vu from The 8-Bit Guy? ;-) Congrats, sounds like a good plan!

MrHammond

That's exciting news. I'd love to see some dedicated videos of the construction, or even some timelapse videos if it's not too intrusive.

Scott Pomp

Some exciting news. Sounds like a brilliant plan.

Andrew Shaw

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Rick Thornquist

Getting the garden office looks like a great addition. More space for both of you and it makes it easier (?) for you to do your videos. So what becomes of the back bedroom now? If you're like most folks, it becomes storage for whatever you don't know where else to put it. Also assuming that when the stereo goes out to the garden office, the Bose Wave stereo stays in the lounge for the Missus while you putter about in your new man-cave?

Mark Hesse

I watch on my big TV with a Chromecast attached. Luckily the Patreon player works fine through the Chromecast 😊

Barry Williams

Congrats on the space upgrade! That sounds like it'll be a nicer space to work in.

Dawn Anthes

Good luck with the rest of the project!

Sergio Meyer

Oh, there's hope for my TV viewing yet 👍🏻

Grace Robbins

The Patreon video player isn't great, but it works okay, and you can still stream to compliant devices, personally I just stream it to my set-top box, and it works pretty much like any YT vid 🤷

Studio Errilhl

Yeah, more room is not a bad thing. My little home office is 2x3m and I share it with a big wardrobe. It's cramped. It's ok for purely sitting at my desk working (or goofing off), but every time I want to mess around with a project or something I have to get it out, set it up on my normal working desk, and pack it away again when I'm done and life's too short for that sort of shenanigans so I usually don't get around to the projects. I'm now planning to do up the loft, bit of insulation needed and all that but that should get me a 3x5m room with space for a little workbench besides my normal computer desk, some bookcases and storage and even a comfy chair! :-) I'm immensely looking forward to it. Don't mind the Patreon player at all. But I'm watching on a laptop so that's not a high bar.

Michel

Did the closed captions turn into Welsh at about 12:45? And if so, was it a good translation?

Certified Nerd

I'm about 50% of the way through watching this, but one thing that's already occurred to me is what people say about council tax. There are weird rules around adding garden rooms and whether the qualify as rooms. It includes things about whether there's plumbing and electricity. Anyway, sorry if you already discuss this in the latter half of the video.

Keir Thomas-Bryant

I thought I was pretty good with computers until I came to watch this post. Blind, use a screen-reader, currently in windows and I can't even find controls. Every now and then I'll get to a part of the page where I hear Mat, then I move away from it trying to find rewind or something, and the audio just... Gets up and leaves. Rude! Still trying to watch this without it interrupting itself. Perhaps it's just a me thing.

Andre Louis

I'm so thrilled for you I could just burst. 😀 A couple years ago I envisioned something like this for you, and now it's happening. I almost got up and do a jig, before realizing I don't know what a jig's steps are and I'd probably fall and crack my head open. The very best part of this is... you can now formally install your linesman's telephones to house and studio! Retro intercom here we come! 📞 You've given me a couple months of living to hang on for because I must see this studio completed. Whatever happens I'll have this to look forward to, at least. One good thing in 2025 - 🤗 For some reason I thought your back garden was larger, but with the cliff dug off it doesn't have as much depth as I thought. 🤔 I remember the video wherein you had the conservatory built in 2009 and the excavation photos. https://youtu.be/TLOur7G9VMs Today is a very good mood day. Anything is possible. 🤍

Grace Robbins

I had a similar size room built in my garden last year. You'll not regret it. I still haven't worked out what to call it. Often referred to as workshop, shed, man cave, out building etc.

Steven harris

Sounds exciting! Looking forward to seeing the new space

GenOrgana

The garden office sounds exciting, thanks for making this video and I hope you can do lots of regular updates as it gets built and fitted out. As to the player, it's fine for me as I'm able to cast it from the patron app to my TV.

SheddyIan

There's a URL for the MP4 file in the source for this page for those that want to go down the downloading route. Note that the file is over 770MB so it's not exactly a light download.

David Boddie

I've just tried casting it from my ancient Samsung S6 via the Patron app to my telly with no problems, so it's okay with me.

David Peaker

Made the mistake of looking at the comments around 2 mins before the end on the iPhone app and the video image froze but the audio continued!

Nick Speller

Congratulations! It sounds like a good plan. Btw the Patreon player works just fine.......

Carsten Junge

Excited to see the new office once it's done, too! Congrats, that'll be a proper boon to productivity.

LGR

Brilliant idea, Mat. Can't wait to see it in action.

W2KDM

Sounds great! Look forward to seeing the end result. Patreon video, just a pain I can’t watch on tv, but not all that bad.

David Unsworth

Prefer youtube as can bounce to tv easier and also watch a lot youtube vids (including old techmoan vids) on my google hub whilst cooking

Retro Nick

Hi Mat, Nice to see how you are doing. A garden office is a great thing. I have one of myself. Just a distance of a couple of meters from you home makes a difference. Thanks for all the graat video's. Michiel.

Michiel Dost

Funnily I recently watched the making of video of a never released video (marantz device) where you talk about your home and its value and size. Cool you now found a sort of solution!

Mels Van Wees

The worst bit is the auto-pause when you scroll down to the comments (like now) but otherwise it is what it is, I can't say it affects the price of fish much. p.s Down South but don't worry, I'm the same - for my business have been looking for years for something that would suit me, it's either overpriced and you're the mug that's going to 'contribute' to the rewire/new roof/new WC block, overpriced and too posh for slightly-more-than-office use, too-temporary in that it's an old subdivided warehouse where the land owner will finally win the planning battle in a year or five or wrestle it off you for their friends sons business with 3 months notice, or too dodgy with landlords you'd better not challenge about anything ever or follow their drug dealer style Range Rover anywhere. It's a nightmare! So like you stuck at home, with not-quite-enough space, though home of course does have some financial benefits.

Lord Brannigan-7

Thanks for sharing, it sounds like a very exciting update and glad to know that the new space will be useful for more interesting content 💿

itsamecalvo

As long as it allows me to view it via the website or app, I don't care where I watch the video.

Allan Clipperton-Boyer

I am really looking forward to see your new space. Good choice (specially with the AC)

Maik Bryant

Super exciting, would love to see some behind the scenes / build / setup process

Jack_fm

Hopefully you’ll get the armour cable installed before the frame and Office construction starts - AND has enough capacity to run your stuff and AirCon. Leave it until after, and your options diminish!

Raymond Okoński

I’m still able to stream to my Apple TV from the Patreon app on my iPad or iPhone

Andrew Behm

Can't stand the patreon player. Always seems to buffer and never plays the video.

Lee

I can stream from the patreon app to my chrome cast, so I have no downside to this way the video is posted!

Thomas Delien

I’m old and have bad eyes. Need to watch on TV. Not a mobile device. Which is why I love watching your vids on YouTube.

Jason Thain

Turns out I must have just muted it, as I pressed the arrow and the audio started playing again. Still not great but at least it is playing.

Kieran Little

Doesn’t bother me at all. Having some Patreon only stuff makes it feel more exclusive.

The Griffiths Family

Video works fine for me, just amused by the automatic subtitles seemingly changing language to Welsh for a bit at about 12 minutes in!

Philip Boardman

At least on desktop in chrome the video player doesn't seem to show its controls to a screenreader. IT did start auto playing but stopped and I can't seem to resume it. I'll see if the iOS / android apps are any better.

Kieran Little

I almost always just instantly add your videos to watch later so I can watch them on the projector in my office on youtube app on Apple TV. I'm rarely watching on the computer or phone. So not a fan of the patreon player, but I understand why you did it.

Jason Dupree

If anyone wants to watch this on their TV, the Patreon smartphone app lets you cast these types of videos to any AirPlay or Chromecast device quite easily.

LGR

Patreon player is great on iOS and can even cast to my TV so all good here!

Im_Cirno

Excited about the studio! Thanks for sharing. As for the player, it’s fine…not great, but it’ll do for what you’re trying to use it for.

Randal Senter

I watch all my techmoan, technology connections, auto shenanigans, etc on YouTube via Roku … don’t like this choice!

Ian Cull

No good sir! I want to start the vid from my email then grab it in the watch history to watch on my TV. As much as I LOVE your channel I would cancel the patreon over this rubbish 🙁

Renn

Not a big fan of the Patreon player, for the reason you mention, but completely understand why you'd put it there. Love the behind-the-scenes stuff. 👍

Gary McConnell

I use the Patreon video myself and it’s super easy to watch. Love it.

The Genos Club

Always appreciate the use of the word Digs. If we were talking very regular uploads, I’d be a bit miffed about having to use the Patreon player constantly. Once a month? I can live with that.

Paul Spencer

And, I wish I could download the video, so I can view while travelling

Graham O'Mara

Space. The final frontier.

Steven O'Brien

Not despised, but not the greatest way to view. But good to see it. Thank you

Graham O'Mara
