Cool New Tech

My favourite gadget of August 2024 (so far) - Personal Air Conditioning.

A quick video about a surprisingly effective device.

Enjoy the rest of the week. Take care.

We just bought a mini fridge with 4L capacity from Adler, which I think does its job with the same tech. It's supposed to cool down fruits and make up stuff for the Mrs., but we mainly use it to keep opened cans of pet-food cool. :)

Andras Csirmaz

The HVAC in my office is horribly unbalanced. I wear a sweatshirt, spring jacket and often a blanket in my room, it is so cold. But I also need the A/C in the winter to combat the extreme heat pumping there.

Arthur Robillard

Wow.

Arthur Robillard

I prefer not to go below 74, A) because I know it's a drain on the grid and raises the electric bill, and B) because I don't like the shock of going from one extreme to the other when you'd have to leave the A/C of a house or office and go out for the public transit/walk home. We don't have central and I insist on no more than 2 window units on at any given time. I know I wouldn't be able to handle European summers, or southern US ones for that matter. New England sees quite the range of temps.

Arthur Robillard

Hope you guys get some cooler weather soon, no AC = misery! You should also look into a personal mister, they usually don't need batteries and just run on a hand pump. A few seconds with that cools you right down.

Chris Horry

I'm happy to hear that it's proved somewhat useful. It's definitely not for everyone. but it does make a difference. It's one of those things that when it's on you're thinking 'this isn't doing much' until you take it off and then you realise that it was doing a lot, you'd just got used to it.

Techmoan

Thank you for doing this review! I never would have thought of getting one of these—I figured they’re all just junky fans or crappy swamp coolers…but mine arrived the other day and I’ve tried it out mowing the lawn, in my temporary (non-AC) office, and just hanging around and it makes a noticeable difference for someone who overheats quite easily. It’s not the perfect solution, but surprisingly effective and I was actually able spend some time enjoying my yard immediately after mowing rather than running inside to stick my head under an AC vent. I’ve found myself wearing it around the house even when the AC is running simply because the cold feels nice on a hot day…I’m not a data guy, but it would be interesting to see if something like this is a viable alternative to cooling an entire home in the long run. Or, maybe just smaller more efficient AV tech takes off.

Joshua Przygocki

Just placed an order for one, this seems awesome.

Asaf Sagi

A whole week! I feel special 🥰

Adam Wishneusky

I’ve been trying to get back to at least a week in advance. So this will be next Saturday’s video.

Techmoan

Humidity doesn’t seem to be an issue. Perhaps for half a day every now and then ‘it’s a bit humid’ but then it rains and it’s all resolved.

Techmoan

I have heard from a number of the UK / US comparison videos about how AC is not common in the UK. Having been raised in Maine in Northeastern New England in the USA in the 1960s, AC was not common. It still was quite warm in the summer. It seems it has either become warmer, or I am just older. I don't know about the warmer part. But, what I don't hear mentioned is another function of AC and the need for it here in the USA is humidity control. I now live in the DC area and aside from it being very hot in the summer, the humidity often is in the high 90% range. It is a steam bath. I know I can tolerate much higher temperatures when it is dry but the humidity saps any energy one might have. Given the rumor that it rains all the time in the UK, one would presume the humidity is high, as well? How does one deal with that aspect of it? Or, am I to assume the Brits are a far hardier lot than us milquetoast Americans with our air-conditioning everywhere?

Charles Gage

I don’t see this on YouTube. How far in advance do you post on patreon?

Adam Wishneusky

I can imagine. My despair is growing exponentially in the last few year it seems. I am looking for alternatives of course. I wonder if it's that or just fueling hope

Raul Ramos

Modern offices have sorted that out by removing controls, and possibly sensors too, democratising air conditioning making everyone feel hot and sweaty

Raul Ramos

Honestly, I don’t think it looks silly. If someone walked past me with this on, I’d be intrigued, but think nothing more of it. If it works, then that’s what matters. Thanks Matt. Lee

Lee Coles

It’s brilliant. Haven’t had the chance to test it in full 33 degree heat yet, but I showed it to my mate here who is now quadriplegic with MS and extremely sensitive to temperature. He bought one immediately. The fact that he can control it via the app with eye tracking on his phone could be life changing, no need to call a carer out just to adjust the NHS supplied AC in his house.

Adam Francis Smith

My ex has MS and heat is brutal for anyone with the disease. I hope it helps.

Dan Weiss

Accompanied by the MacMullet beard, preferably 😅

Grace Robbins

You would die in European summers as they are quite hot as well but mostly without AC. But for these few unbearable weeks a year an AC doesn't make much sense. As a kid I had my room under the roof and a skylight without blinds so it was EXTREMELY hot. It was horrible. AC is a nice thing, don't get me wrong. But the amount of power you need for cooling down so much is absurd. Getting used to 75 would make a huge difference. Maybe the price for energy in the US is very low and that's why people don't care. I'm not the one to judge. I just observed it. We had an appartment in Palm Spring for two days and a sign next to the AC said "don't set it under 75". This made absolute sense. It was 115 outside.

Michael Wehr

Good tip. I’ve seen that same terminology used in Chinese cameras.

Techmoan

Thought I would mention that to stop the beeping noise when changing settings, it's necessary to disable "voice prompt" in the app. Currently enjoying a cool neck.

Simon Arnold

The Mc Mullet wig makes a triumphant return!

Simon Arnold

You're absolutely correct about Americans love of air con. I'm very hot blooded and summer is my least favorite time of the year. To avoid suffering in a sweaty mess, I have my apartment at 69°F and that's the temperature I wish it was all year. I should consider moving to a better climate. 😁

Grace Robbins

As a lady with long hair, I would presume it's best to pull up into a ponytail to avoid the pocket of hot air that blows out of the item.

Grace Robbins

Now I have a picture in my head with Techmoan wearing a wig to test and answer your question.

Michael Wehr

As I trust your judgement I just ordered one. My wife has often very long home office conferences and this might really help her. Was a bit hard to use your affiliate link and I hope it worked as I use the european Amazon shop. It was 143 Euros. I just came back from a 3 week US holiday. We had rarely unter 100 Fahrenheit. And I was really shocked how aburdly cold the americans set their AC. I always changed the AC in any hotel or appartment we stayed in to 75 Fahrenheit as I was getting cold in any supermarket or hotel. It is insane to cool down to 69 Fahrenheit if you have more than 100 outside. But Americans seem to love getting a cold in the summer ;-)

Michael Wehr

I think mine is defective, works fine, but definitely noisier than the one you purchased

Robert Norman

How does it work with longer hair? And I'm glad a new tech that's actually good for once!

Richard R.

Just got back from Japan where it was 35 degrees and humid. People were using things like this everywhere! It seems to be the next big thing when it is too hot and humid in summer.

Dt91c

I forget what video it was now where I talked about how Sony's website looked like they still sold a variety of audio products but when you drill down into the categories there was next to nothing there. Anything that looked like it was still on sale was 'out of stock', they just hadn't deleted the web page yet. They really have pretty much given up on consumer electronics and almost all cameras that don't have interchangeable lenses. I remember reading years ago that they made way more money out of their financial arm, I think it was life insurance or something, than they did from selling electronics. It's a bit grim and I hesitate at calling it progress, it's similar to getting old and knackered - it's not progress, it's just how things go whether we like it or not.

Techmoan

If I were you I’d send it back to Amazon and get a refund. If you don’t like it now, you won’t like it any more once the return period has passed.

Techmoan

Unrelated, but Sony seems to be getting out of more and more market segments lately. First, they quietly discontinued their last cassette recorder (the CFD-S70 boombox), and now they're discontinuing their last consumer-grade Handycam, the HDR-CX405. Of course there was no official announcement, but it's now out of stock almost everywhere. The end of a product line they've had since 1985.

VWestlife

Nah.. It's more of a construction environment right now. And most of the time I've been in there by myself. We're getting 4 large HVAC units installed next week. But right now it's still over 100 degrees in there because it is August in Texas. I'll take any amount of extra cooling I can get.

The 8-Bit Guy

Mmm…mine seems quite noisy even on the lower settings

Robert Norman

Yes it likely utilises the Peltier effect.

Techmoan

I know that situation all too well. Possibly the hardest part of my job was mediating the aircon wars between big fellas that would sweat in the Artic and tiny women who were capable of ‘feeling a draft on my neck’ in a vacuum.

Techmoan

I've just ordered one (via. affiliate link). The white is about £127. I bought the azure one for £16 more - wicked vanity. I am in a large office in which the ladies have control of the air conditioning. Therefore I'll have a use for this all year round!

Simon Arnold

Enjoyable video, and I'm really glad it functions as advertised. Ashamedly I chuckled when the pesky insects began to bombard you - another hazard of 'relaxing' outside for any period of time. Keep cool 😎. Take care. 🤍

Grace Robbins

Didn't (and don't) mean to cause offence. Peltier devices are interesting. They are a ceramic slab, often bonded to a heat sink. Apply power, and one side gets cold and the other side gets hot. Reverse the power for the opposite effect. Add a fan and you've got your neck heater/cooler. I think the packaging said it uses semiconductor technology.

Jonathan in London

The manufacturer doesn’t mention it and throwing technical terminology about isn’t really what I’m about. Any viewers who know about it already know about it and any that don’t, don’t care.

Techmoan

Fair point. Surprised you didn't mention Peltier technology. Actually those mini dehumidifiers also have CPU fans in them, as I had to replace one.

Jonathan in London

I’ll leave this a week or so before making it public, hopefully by then they’ve restocked.

Techmoan

It employs cylindrical low noise cpu cooler style fans. I don’t know who invented those.

Techmoan

Surely this is a couple of Peltier devices https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling using the effect discovered by Mr Peltier in 1834, rather before we started using heat sinks for computer chips! The same devices are used in tiny dehumidifiers.

Jonathan in London

Ordered with affiliate link :) I rarely see you so enthusiastic about something. And due to gas prices my work is keeping the office at 26. And what you described as not thinking at all in the heat is exactly me, which is tough when your job is scientific advancement. :) Very much looking forward to this. I see you sold out in the US already LOL. Did this even go public yet? Hold off until then are back in stock.

Levi Littvay

I was in an almost constant state of dispair from starting working in 1987 until leaving to do this full time in 2015. It’s a massive relief to do something creative and whenever a video isn’t working out I just remember how bad things were for almost 30 years and it’s all good.

Techmoan

People usually want to be cool. When you are young it's important to look cool. But as you get older, feeling cool just starts to feel more important. And yes, cooling your head does make the biggest difference as that's where the brain is. A tip I got from my physiotherapist was that if you feel nausea from heat, put on a beanie that's been in the freezer.

J Ruonti

I know, they're much better... But difficult to find, when I bought my unit, I was already happy just to find one, a couple of years ago, when it was also exceptionally hot during a longer time period in summer, all units were sold out everywhere...

MrHammond

Hahaha, look who speaks though! I have done a few unusual things as an engineer, which poses more of a problem to HR than anything else. It was however a fairly meaningful job. I am not sure slaving for corporate is anywhere in the ballpark of meaningful, though it does pay the mortgage. Your job though, it is definitely meaningful and definitely unusual. I for one have to thank you for going back to listen to music and fiddle with it, which has a definite mental health benefit. Had you ever thought on your lunch strolls you'd end up doing this?

Raul Ramos

One of the first gadgets I can remember you being able to recommend for it doing what it claims. Very nice. Since it has actually not been too bad here in Minnesota USA I don't need one right now. But I will keep this bookmarked for a possible purchase next year. Happy and stunned it actually works

Andrew Shaw

Those are getting better, the new one we bought this year has the dual hose setup so you aren't pulling hot air in down your chimney and under your doors like you do with the single hose ones, and the exhaust hose is insulated so you aren't heating up the air in the room while trying to cool it. It didn't cost any more than the one we replaced (actually moved it into one of our kids' room) that we bought 2 years ago.

Illrigger

My wife has MS and the heat wreaks havoc with her, so after watching I went to Amazon and lo and behold there was a lightning sale plus a coupon for it, bringing the price down from $199 to 149! Needless to say, it'll be here Friday before she has to go out in the heat over the weekend. Thanks for the review, Mat!

Illrigger

I always mixed feeling when it ain't tat! It's hard to be delightfully sardonic and ironic when the thing is actually remarkably useful! Even in the the 24/7 air conditioned world of Los Angeles, I can see this device being a positive boon to hikers (or those who walk a normal pace on dirt... is that hiking?). It's pretty roasty on the trails now and you have to get out and back before noon if you don't want to perish. Currently the "state of the art" for outdoor cooling is the old wet bandana around the neck which I have found works for approximately 17 seconds before drying out.

David Fulton

This channel is so bad for my wallet! I have a neck fan, but have found that it doesn't work as well as those cooling Mission fitness towels. This seems like it might be just what I'm looking for.

Erik Granlund

That’s one heck of a C.V. entry.

Techmoan

I had flashbacks of the time I was designing air conditioned on armoured vehicles. On your face mate, forget about conditioning the air. Directly on your face full blast, that's what we want

Raul Ramos

I'm absolutely shocked. I thought these things were fake. Going to pick one up for yard work in Houston.

Timothy Roller

Neath, but for at home now, I still prefer the stupidly-inefficient-hose-to-the-outside-noisy air conditioning unit... Unfortunately, this gadget is just too expensive to just buy to try, but I'll keep it on mind, when Mat thinks something is useful it usually is :-)

MrHammond

And then annoying your co-workers with heating up the space even more? ;-) I guess in the Texan summers you really need a strong split-unit airco, hope the one for the arcade arrives soon!

MrHammond

I know what you mean as I’ve experienced the same problems in the past with noise cancelling headphones and fans. So far whenever I’ve worn my Apple AirPods Pro 2nd gen with the neck con they’ve worked perfectly to remove all fan noise and I watched TV like this the other night. Of course different headphones/fan speeds/ears might still produce undesired results.

Techmoan

Have you tried these with noise cancelling headphones on at all? I've had issues with such headphones when I have a fan on nearby - the air movement causes the same noise cancelling issues these devices have with wind. I would imagine blowing air up directly over where your ears are might cause a similar effect?

Philip King

Yes the 9th July is the most recent one.

Techmoan

I think the main issue with scaling this into something like a desktop fan is that the warm air still needs to be sent away somewhere and then you're back to the pipe hanging out of the window.

Techmoan

He doesn't seem to mind it - although when it's hot he also doesn't want to sit on my knee, so everything has been from a distance.

Techmoan

Most importantly, does the cat mind the fan noise?

Phil Collins

I wish I’d had one when I worked from home in the summer…

Phil Collins

Great video, Mat. Really surprised that device actually worked. Makes me wonder how scalable it is, both from functionality and cost-effectiveness points of view. Thanks!

Roland Bogush

I never thought this would work---- AT ALL! But nice that it did so well :-) Btw, Have I missed a oddcast? Last I saw was from Juli 9. If you haven't made any more, that's fine, just wondered.

Pin Swede

It definitely does. There's no other mechanism to cool in such a small space

Tony Drake

I wonder if it works via the Peltier effect that was mentioned by Alec in a recent video on Technology Connections. Anyway, it's definitely an interesting device--especially since it actually seems to work as intended. It's good to know you at least have that to keep somewhat cooler during your heat waves. I suppose you've got to get another one for the Mrs. now. Not something that would be useful for me, since I've got central air conditioning here in the US. However my HVAC system is getting old and will need replacement soon. Probably will have it done next spring when we're between heating season and cooling season and the local HVAC installer will give a discount. Even so, the estimated cost is over $7000.00 (although I'm ready for something closer to $10K)--yikes!

Mark Hesse

I was in Japan last summer and picked up a lower-end unit (needs external power) that is not a lot more than a couple of fan-cooled peltier elements pressed against your neck. It does help but I like the design of this one more, though mine only cost $30 US, so there’s that. I’m investing the difference in a heat pump system for my house next year.

The Griffiths Family

I wonder if this how the cyborg uprising is going to begin? It starts with Ranvoo Aice Lite and ends with a Hazardous Environment Suit, (any Half Life fans?) All I can say, "Matt, you look cool."

CrimsonPig808

Just Another Excellent Video, and I Agree with the 8-bit guy. DAMN you, now I want one Too!! [Us 62 year olds get hot quick] Some Server rooms aren't exactly cooled and this....!

Stephen Hamme

Perfect timing.

Techmoan

Thanks Mat, this could change my life. They're sold out/at scalper prices in Italy where I live but I'm visiting the UK at the moment and mine should arrive tomorrow morning.

Adam Francis Smith

Of all the people I thought might need this, you definitely weren't on the list - I've been envious of the aircon in your studio recently. I never considered your arcade.

Techmoan

Living in Scotland, I have absolutely no use for this at all - but suddenly I want one.

Andrew Torrance

Darn you TechMoan! Now I'm going to have to go order one of these. I've been working in the arcade the last week, sweating myself to death because the air conditioning isn't installed yet. This might just help me not die of a heat stroke.

Randall Jennings

I saw that project farm video but I didn't know if they actually really worked or did anything appreciable. Now I do!

Funkmon

Okay I've added it to the wishlist. Nothing better than a sunny day where you don't get hot.

Funkmon

"Your fan is up to date." Before I played the video, I assumed this would be one of those £15 jobbies I'd seen in B&M Bargains which I've seen a few bus drivers wear recently! This obviously looks a nicer device!

Brad Jones

I feel like I'd get addicted to this the same way I wear my noise cancelling headphones for hours at a time.

Taras Young

I was skeptical about these neck-mounted personal coolers, until Project Farm tested a whole bunch of them a few weeks back. Between his comparison and this video, I'm now convinced I need to buy one before summer hits down here.

OzRetrocomp

Add on the Ordro EP8 camera and I’d be the coolest cat around.

Techmoan

No…but that’s because I’ve been inside making videos. If I get the chance to sit in the back garden on a sunny day I’ll definitely be taking this out with me, stick the noise cancelling earbuds in and listening to a podcast.

Techmoan

You should wear this and those neck speakers at the same time. It would look as cool as you feel.

Michael Jordan

I'm genuinely surprised these work. I wasn't even sure until you showed the temperature of the exhaust vents. Wow. I am not going to buy this immediately because I am poor but wow. Maybe next summer during lawn mowing season. Mat, would you say that this product has made you spend more time outside than you would have otherwise?

Funkmon

Excellent work on that thumbnail hahaha 😁 Can't wait to watch with the wife after work!
